VS 2008 Express?

Can anyone tell me if they've been able to create modules with VS 2008 Express?  I get an error saying "The project is not supported by this type of installation"

Re: VS 2008 Express?

Hi Sean,

I have successfully created two custom modules with Visual Web Developer 2008 using the module starter kit, packaged them up with DNN and uploaded them to my remote installation. The only limit is that you cannot compile your module. I think the problem you face happens while trying to open a VS project, this operation is not suppported as far as i know.

Best regards,
Dario Rossa

Re: VS 2008 Express?

I bought the DNN module and downloaded the source code and the PA. I installed the PA like any other DNN module. I then opened the source files in VSWD 2008 Express and made changes to a few of the .cs files. Because VSWD 2008 Express will not allow me to compile the code into a DLL I am not able to simply replace the original DLL that is in the DNN bin folder.

I suppose I should do the following:

1. unistall the current version from my DNN install
2. create a new manifest file that makes reference to the .cs files (as the current manifest does not)
3. zip all the needed files together
4. install the new zip file as a new module

Will this approach work? And, do the .cs files go in the same DNN directory as the .ascx files?  Is there a way to compile DLLs without paying for the full version of VS?

  • Yes
  • The .cs files not associated with a .ascx control go in the App_Code directory
  • no, but the new vs Express 2008 (that is in Beta) will.
