Events 4.0 and Visual Studio 2008

Hi,

In the release notes of the events 4.0, it says that the development needs Visual Studio 2008.

Does it mean that we can't develop on events 4.0 with Visual Studio 2005?

and Why?

Thank you for informations.

William

Re: Events 4.0 and Visual Studio 2008

We moved the project over to VS2008 to stay as current as possible. WIth VS2008, we can develop both .NET 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5. The version for Events is specified as .NET 2.0. VS2008 sources files differ from VS2005 sources files (e.g. partial classes for the .vb design files in VS2008), it's a one way upgrade.

Practical (excuse?): I use my professional environment for DNN (my hobby/free time -if any-) development. My professional organisation (www.xcess.nl) is Microsoft Gold Cerified partner, we have standardised on VS2008 since the day it became available. I do not use VS2005 anymore (not on my PC). Sorry.

Suggestion (apart from upgrading your VS2005 to VS2008, which I can recommend): The Express versions of VS2008 are freely available from Microsoft and I think these can be used for development on Events as well.

Curious: what would you like to change with Events 04.00.00? Are these general ideas/suggestions/enhancements that we can review for 04.01.00?

Regards,
Ernst Peter

Re: Events 4.0 and Visual Studio 2008

Ok Ernst Peter and thank you for your answer.

Here it is what I would like to change in the module Events :

- the display list and the detail of an event based on "skins" with [TOKEN]. I need more way of displaying the events.

- a checkbox in the event creation form to display or not the date and hour of end of an event and to choose it for each event

- a dialog between the month view and a module list view in the same page. I mean like a blog : when you select a date in the calendar the list displays all the events of this date selected. And if it is in 2 modules you can put your calendar and list in different Pane of your skin

- some "little" modules to put on the first page of my website to

An objective for 04.01.00 (the version after this) is to template all display formats. High prio enhancement

 - a checkbox in the event creation form to display or not the date and hour of end of an event and to choose it for each event

Should be part of the template. But an option per event would be nice as well. I will add it to the issues for 04.01.00.

We have a flexible RSSfeed in mind for 04.01.00. I think this can do both.

Please note: the feature list for 04.01.00 is not finalized yet. All team members are voluntaires (as almost all DNN Development workers are), so resources will influence the choices to be made.

If you want to see the issues for the Events module, have a look at: http://support.dotnetnuke.com/project/Project.aspx?PROJID=11

Like Ernst Peter has pointed out, the Events team uses VS2008 to develop Events 4.0.  It is best if you get the same tool.

However, if vs2005 is all you have, the Events 4.0 source should work if you have VS2005 with SP1 (to support Web Application Project).
