We are developing our Intranet site, mainly using word and pdf files which of course reside in the root directory.  More recently we have developed flow charts using Microsoft Visio, with links to other charts, and saved them as htm files.  Whilst the links all work when accessing from the main head office, the links do not work when accessing from home or a remote location. A typical path name is X:\Library\Intranet Files\Global\Health & Safety\How Do I\Process Charts\filename.htm

I suspect it is related to our firewall and the way the path

Can anyone help us overcome this please.

As a non-technical person I will ask IT to review your suggestions, although I am sure we tried option 3 and linked them as a file, however there are other "save as" options available in the dropdown menu, such as, ftp,gofher,http,https, wais and others. 

As our systems are not mature, I suspect we may be changing them.  The process charts are created/amended in Visio and published/republished as a html file.  This file is then uploaded to a root directory used for DNN.

Word documents are converted to pdf files and saved to the same root directory.  For some reason, these files are easiliy accessed from any remote site
