Links from HTM file

We are developing our Intranet site, mainly using word and pdf files which of course reside in the root directory.  More recently we have developed flow charts using Microsoft Visio, with links to other charts, and saved them as htm files.  Whilst the links all work when accessing from the main head office, the links do not work when accessing from home or a remote location. A typical path name is X:\Library\Intranet Files\Global\Health & Safety\How Do I\Process Charts\filename.htm

I suspect it is related to our firewall and the way the path

Can anyone help us overcome this please.

Re: Links from HTM file
We had the same issue here when we migrated to DNN. You have three options: (1) host the external (X: drive) files on DNN; (2) create a page that will request the external files and return them to the user by setting the content type; or, (3) migrate the HTML files to DNN Text/HTML modules and link to them. The first option is going to be the most involved in the long run. The second will probably be easier to get it up and running as well as set you up for additional files in the future. The third option is going to be the most involved up-front, but will provide the best management option if external people need to manage those files. A few questions I'd ask are how often do these files change and is there a specific way they're managed (i.e. Visio HTML exports)? If they change a lot or they're dependant on some other file, the second option is probably the best.

There are any number of factors that can go into this, so you'll have to really understand how the process works and may change in the future to come up with a good solution that will stand the test of time.

Re: Links from HTM file

Thanks for your quick response and feedback Michael. As a non-technical person I will ask IT to review your suggestions, although I am sure we tried option 3 and linked them as a file, however there are other "save as" options available in the dropdown menu, such as, ftp, gofher, http, https, wais and others.

As our systems are not mature, I suspect we may be changing them.  The process charts are created/amended in Visio and published/republished as a html file.  This file is then uploaded to a root directory used for DNN.

Word documents are converted to pdf files and saved to the same root directory.  For some reason, these files are easiliy accessed from any remote site

Regards John
