Import/Export Functionality

I need to add approximately 700 links to a module and would love to do this in bulk as opposed to manually configuring each one manually.  I exported the current links module to an XML file and tried to add a link to test the import functionality.  I received an error importing the original file with an additional entry and also with a file with only the one entry I was testing with.  The files were properly formatted.  The only change I made was to format the document in Visual Studio Express 2005 and save the changes.  Is this the proper way to do this or is there a better way?  Also, how do you troubleshoot the error message returned when the Import fails?  Thanks in advance.

Re: Import/Export Functionality

I will let you know this now, the import / export functionality has not worked properly in the module since I took it over. One of the problems was with links that had been set to track clicks.

The good news is that this will all be fixed as well as provide optional ways of importing links.

Re: Import/Export Functionality

If you are have already created the module and just want to add links, you can insert the appropriate data in to the Links Table.

If you are familiar with T-SQL then this should be straight forward.   If not, you should play around with a test site until you can insert the records with out any side-effects.  If you are unsure how to do this, then I would wait for the next version of Links (or performed the entry manually).

The links table is straight forward as it's basically one row per link displayed, however as noted above the real issue is where you want UrlTracking or UrlLogging.  IIf required,  you will need to insert the appropriate data info the database.    There are stored procedures to perform the "Adds" if you wish.  While not ideal,  this method could get you around the issue of adding 700 links to a module  (???!!!???)

Hope this helps.
Paul.

Re: Import/Export Functionality

Thanks Alec.  Does the export/import functionality issue apply to all DNN modules and 3rd party modules as well or just the default links module?  I have also tried the latest version of Glinks as well.  The exported XML file looks correct.  I add a an entry, attempt to import and receive an error.

Re: Import/Export Functionality

Thanks Paul. I am familiar with T-SQL and will look into using it to add links manually.
