Saving linked doc defaults to 'Copy of LinkClick.aspx' as doc name

I'm using DNN 4.5.1 and have a question about default naming behavior of linked documents that you try to save to your local machine.

I have a page that is set up as a File Link to an Excel document. The document has been properly loaded through the File Manager to a subdirectory under the Portals directory. The Excel spreadsheet loads fine when the Page link is clicked, but when you try to save the spreadsheet to the local hard drive, the default name provided by Internet Explorer is 'Copy of LinkClick.aspx'. Documents we also link to on our Home Page with the Links module have this same behavior when trying to save a document - and this is true regardless of the file type (.doc, .pdf, .xls, etc). This behavior occurs in both IE 6 and IE 7. Fwiw, I have the proper web.config language in the 'httpHandler' section.

Is there a way to configure things so that the document title (such as "MyDoc.xls"), not 'LinkClick' is displayed as the default 'Save As' name? Our clients find the "LinkClick" default annoying.

Thanks in advance.

Bill

Re: Saving linked doc defaults to 'Copy of LinkClick.aspx' as doc name

Has this issue been resolved?

I am having the same issue in upgrading to 4.7.0.

Or is this a core issue?

Re: Saving linked doc defaults to 'Copy of LinkClick.aspx' as doc name

The only way you would be able to control the name of the file is to directly link to it, e.g. use the text/html module and manually create a link to it. The main problem here is that since the file is inside the file respository, it is then accessed via the LinkClick.aspx page. This function helps provide security for your document. When you open this via a browser, it opens the file stream and gives it the name of the page that it is obtaining ti from. This is the behavior of the browser and not the Links Module and therefore cannot be changed.

Re: Saving linked doc defaults to 'Copy of LinkClick.aspx' as doc name

Alec,

Thanks for your quick response, I appreciate it.

Obviously this is not your area, as I have (since that post) found this to be a core issue, not a Links Module issue.  That said, when I switch between Firefox and IE6 or IE7, if I open the file, the behavior is the same, it titles the open document 'Linkclick.aspx'.  However, if I right click to do a "Save as", IE6 and IE7 provide me with the file name, while Firefox still give "linkclick.aspx" as the file name.  Do you have any ideas about this, or is there any hint of a solution coming in future versions of DNN?

Again, thanks for the quick response, I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Alex

Re: Saving linked doc defaults to 'Copy of LinkClick.aspx' as doc name

Alex,

No problems.

As far as the way the browsers address saving of the file, that is implemented by the browser. I had a corporate internal site that we would share docs on (Non DNN or SharePoint) and Firefox would always pick the name of the page, not the actual file. So I would have to say that this is not within the control of the framework.
