How to alter links module in VS 2005

I am new to DNN and just completed upgrading the announcement module to allow for item level security. I would now like to apply the same concept to the links module, but noticed it's written in VS 2003. Is there a .NET 2.0 version of this module? I tried converting the 2003 code to 2005 but received a lot of errors. Any ideas on how to proceed on getting the source code to 2005 would be appreciated. Thanks!
