3.5 Unusable...

Sorry for the following rant...  this a great community with great volunteers, but there is a flaw in the release process.

If there was ever a need for an (immediate) emergency point release to a module, I would think this would be it!!  The Rich Text column is completely unusable.  I did an upgrade of the UDT module on a site with a substantial number of UDT's that use Rich Text columns, and now implementation has to be rolled back...

Then, I find that the point release has been in the release process for over 2 weeks!!!  Why??  Fix the major bug and the major bug only and release immediately or pull the 3.5 version from the downloads page!!

Re: 3.5 Unusable...

timk,

each module release needs to pass the release process, consisting of  several steps including stress tests on stage, demo portal and dotnetnuke.com, where issues have occured and need to be investigated. There are multiple fixes and enhancements included in UDT 3.5.1 that require to be tested. Sure, next time we can use different version number but I don't see an advantage in calling it V 3.6.0.

If you have an urgent need, drop me an email: sebastian (dot) leupold (at) dotnetnuke.com

Re: 3.5 Unusable...

Thanks for the quick reply, Sebastian. Also, thanks for all your work on the UDT… it has come a long way from the early days of DNN. I was able to rollback my implementation, so I will wait for v3.5.1 to be released (hopefully, very soon!!).

I fully understand standard the need for a structured release process as I have been developing software for a long time. My point to the last post has nothing to do with what you call the next release, but points out the need to have an exception to the structured release process or an expedited release process... call it a hotfix, patch, v3.5.0.1, whatever... please consider the following:

  • v3.5.0 is put through the release process and passes
  • v3.5.0 is released to the community
  • v3.5.0 is determined to have a major bug which is not caught during the release process
  • One of two things should now happen (IMHO)
    • v3.5.0 is pulled from distribution because it is not fully functional and shouldn’t have passed the release process
      OR
    • the code base for v3.5.0 is updated with ONLY the changes needed to fix the major flaw and an expedited release process is used to release the update (regardless of what it is called) in a matter of hours, not days or weeks.

Once again, thanks for what you do for this community and I will patiently await the update.

Re: 3.5 Unusable...

sorry timk,

there are processes defined, the teams have to follow. I will try to analyse the issues this WE and hopefully they will not block the module from being released.
