Importing Dataset From MS Excel into UDT

Hi All

I have an Excel spreadsheet containing 400+ rows of data (contacts list) that I would like to import into an existing contacts UDT.  Is this possible, looking at the import function on the UDT itseems to allow only a module??? to be imported, I need the data from the Excel sheet to be added.

Re: Importing Dataset From MS Excel into UDT

there is no official UI, you can try to setup a UDT module with appropriate columns and 1-2 test rows, export the module, which will generate an XML file and replace your test rows with an xml export of your Excel table. save the file and re-import it. Make sure, to create valid XML and all field values match the column type.

Re: Importing Dataset From MS Excel into UDT

HI Sebastian,

This is my first post to the DNN forums. Please forgive any obvious naivete.

I looked at DNN a couple of years ago, between versions 2 and 3 in development. I've recently taken on a project which has multiple architectural issues, and the possibility of importing Excel worksheets is one.

Is this response (above) the latest and final method? I will have Users who, after downloading and filling out worksheets, may want to upload the data for further processing.

Paul

Re: Importing Dataset From MS Excel into UDT

The XML approach is probably better if you're comfortable with it.  I did a similar thing (I had a 400 x 10 excel table) by saving the spreadsheet as a CSV file, then processing it with Autoit3, which is a simple scripting language for Windows that allows you to create keystrokes, mouse movements etc.  I just ran the script and it did the work in about 20 minutes while I walked the dogs.  I could provide the script I used (a whole 30 lines of 'code') if you're interested.  I wish there was a way to run Autoit3 scripts from within DNN, as it would make many onerous tasks trivial.

Re: Importing Dataset From MS Excel into UDT

Hi Paul,

UDT does not support Excel import, if you need your users to upload files for further processing, you can use UDT or any other upload module like Repository to allow your users to upload Excel files, but you will not be able to display the content immediately. There used to be a module "MagicExcel" from www.portalfabrik.net, which is able to display content of a single XLS file, you might contact the developer Philipp Becker, if he is willing to combine his module according to your needs.
