Wow - as simple as that! Many thanks Stefan - it did the trick. On first install attempt after making the change, the first error in my post above was still there. But fortunately, XML then appeared on the installed modules list (it didn't before), so I was able to uninstall it and then install it successfully.

Jeff,

the first error is not critical. It just tells me that the needed sql tables and procedures are already there, so the sql change script causes an issue. Nevertheless the xml module should work even without  reinstalling.
