Recently I have noticed that our forum performance has been getting slower. Adding new posts and adding replies can take a while to come up and display with timeouts somethimes being reported. I have already implemented the following changes to the host performance settings:

Page State Persistence: Select the mode to use to persist a page's state. This can either be a hidden field on the Page (Default) or in Memory (Cache).	Page Memory
Module Caching Method: Memory caching provides the most flexibility and is the highest performance method however it also consumes the most system resources. Disk caching is the least expensive on resources but does not offer any flexibility.	Memory Disk
Performance Setting: Select how to optimize performance.	No Caching Light Caching Moderate Caching Heavy Caching   Clear Cache
Authenticated Cacheability: Sets the Cache-Control HTTP header value for authenticated users.	NoCache Private Public Server ServerAndNoCache ServerAndPrivate
Compression Setting: Select the type of Http Compression to use.	No Compression Deflate Compression GZip Compression
Use Whitespace Filter: Select this to remove excess white space from the response sent to the client - this will result in a smaller download (10-15%) but it will make the html less readable.

The DNN site resides on a Windows Server 2003 based server (using IIS 6.0) connected to a MS SQL 2005 cluster for the DNN database. Am I using the best performance settings for the forum module, can I make further changes to improve performance?

I typically use settings similar to what Matthias has. While I am sure there is room for improvement, there shouldn't be any major performance issues outside of search. I am having no issues zipping around the forum here and there are several hundred-thousand posts here. If you can use SQL Profiler, this will help you 'trace' what is taking long.
