DNN V. 4.8.4 Attachments is a bit cryptic.

Hi.

New user to DNN and I'm finding it very good, You have done a lot of work to come this far

But i'm a little puzzled as to why the upload attachments is working the way it is!

I have removed all View permissions via 'Admin -> File Manager', and only set Write Enabled on the folder 'Portal Root'
and offcourse set the 'Admin->General Settings->Post Attachments' when your in the forum.

So now when a user wants to upload, the user wont see any files or folders in the Pop Up upload window.
But then the user also can't find the file, cuz he can't see it!
So i had to enable the 'View' again, now they can see all files in the folder

So I tested and tried to upload a different file with the same name, and that whent like a charm
It replaced the old file with the new one without warning or anything else

So I really see the need for a change to the upload attachments module.

Would be much better and safer and simple if the user didn't se anything on the server, but just got the option to search he's own PC and hit upload.

If you remove the view permissions in the file manager for the users role, it is clear he can't see the files.  Also if you want the user can upload, the role must have upload permission for the folder.

Hei Matthias.

Maybee I formulated my self a bit wrongly, it was past my bed time

I have the uploads working, and also able to to get the image into the post.

What i'm saying is just :

It would be better to just have a Upload button, opens a upload window where the user browses local HD(and not the server), hit upload and thats it.

Basic user are gonna have a really hard time understanding how it works now.

It's just a heads up and a request for the next version or when ever ther would be time for it.

Hi BosJo,

the upload feature for the downloads used the DotNetNuke Security, and you have first select the Folder for the upload.  Then if you have select the Folder you can check the Upload button, if the user have teh permission to upload (File Manager).  Now you can search on your Hard Disk for the file you like to upload.

I see no other way to make this as a secure connection on client side.

Re: DNN V. 4.8.4 Attachments is a bit cryptic.

Yes, it uses the DNN security, and I don't doubt the security at all.

1.
Imagine user1 uploads img1.jpg and post it in he's post.
Now user2 wants to upload an image, this image has the same name; img1.jpg

Now user2's image overwrites user1's image

I see a need for an unik image name rewrite script when images are uploaded

2.
Imagine we now have 500 users on the site.
Each user uploads 5 images, thats 5*500=2500 images in the folder.
Now you upload a new image, then you have to manually scroll through the 2501 image's to find the one you just uploaded, click on it, and then click ones more to get back to the Post/Reply page.
It is a good thing that everyone have access to the same images, so they only need to be uploaded once. But who want to scroll through 2501+ images???
Thats for Moderators and page developers, not the every day average user.

1 button, find file on PC, click upload and the img is automatically added to your post......even that simple an approach isactually hard for many people to do.

Now imagine if the same approach was used on a site like photobucket.com then there would be 5billion images to scroll through in that folder!

3.
It should make a thumbnail if size is greater than value given in control panel, the user should not be allowed to set the size.
it will totally destroy the page layout when large images are uploaded.

I wish I had programming experience, then I could have made something myself and contributed it to the dnn community, but I don't and I can't
