I personally object the addition of this "feature", but to all those asking for it anyways, here's a workaround:

  1. Add an "anonymous" username with "anonymous" password.
  2. Authorize this user it in your portal.
  3. Log in as anonymous, visit your forum, logout
  4. Add instructions for users that want to leave anonymous messages to use this username and pwd.

Shortcomings.

  • It can only be used with one portal per install.
  • Statistics will somewhat skewed.(Top poster, last post by might always be Anonymous)
  • Difficult references to someone's post.

Re: Anonymous posting

Personally object all you want, but providing what people ask for is a lot more useful. Would you object if we branch the source and provide this functionality?

I cannot object something that you want to do personally. Naturally, you are fit to do whatever you wish with the code, that's why it is open source. The Core Team does not encourage branching, but there's nothing stopping you from doing it.

A few things to keep in mind:

  1. Before branching re-read the documentation that applies to usage rights of DNN brands.
  2. Make plans to provide yourself resources needed to those that will use the version you start. These resources include: support forums, download location, release and development information and so forth.
  3. Stablish a method to implement future functionality, unless you are happy with current features plus the one you plan to add.

You see, I said personally because that's my opinion and to use your wording I chose not to be useful in a way that pleases you but rather than allowing people that do not want to or can not branch. Now go ahead and be as useful as you want.

Re: Anonymous posting

The work around is of little value as a user could login and change the password.

Anon posting is a fairly standard feature in forums.  Some may not agree with its use but it is a feature some clients want.  If DNN projects are run by personal views of the managers only then this is not a good sign.  It should hopefully be run based on user feedback and requests of the community.

If the feature is not added then users will just look elsewhere for a solution.
