Please see a post where I said: "

To clarify, I am not against anon posting but I did not see the use case myself before. As time has gone on, others have showed me some good examples. However, I am testing huge permission changes around this module and I cannot include this in the next release (anonymous posting). Once I know the module is solid using the new permission methods (See my blog for details, its very grid like and intuitive) then it will be possible to work this in as a future enhancement. I have already marked places in the code via comments where things have to change."

I too have a website where I need to allow anonymous users to post to the forum.  Some people just want to post a questions without having to give out an email, username, password etc.  With all the spam, I can't say I blame them.  Another highly used website forum that allows anon posting is www.sqlteam.com.  Keep up all the good work.

Can we set up some kind of poll to see how many users would find the anon posting useful?

No poll is necessary, it will happen when I can get to it and when the module itself is ready for it. This post should no longer be active.

First I appreciate all of the hard work on the module.

This is another use case for you to consider.  The Government Agency that I work for wants to allow users to post without having a username or to register so, if their question could lead to reprisal or other problems, then they can't be indentified.  We already have a forum system running under PHP but there is a new idea that I would like to use the DNN Forum with for simplicity.  It is a requirement to have Anonymous postings.  The PHP forum already implements this and it would be required to switch from PHP to a DNN module.  As an addition, I can think of at least 3 agencies that use DNN that are related to the one I work for and it they were to implement a Forum the same requirements would have to be met.  The Forums, of course, would be Moderated and the url would only be available through Email contact so it would prevent massive spamming or other problems.

As a side note,  after reading the earlier postings to this forum it highlights one of the problems that I have encountered more and more with DNN.  I think some of the members of the projects and core teams have forgotten something.  We, the users, are the consumers of your product.  I do see that Anon. Posting may become a feature in the future which may be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view, but the way the inital suggestion was handled in the early part of the forum highlights the problem.  If you treat your consumers badly they will go elsewhere, then you will no longer have to worry about the product because it will cease to exist.  I just think some of the earlier replies could have been handled in a much more appropriate manner and they have taken away some of the unhappiness.  If I had just read the first couple of pages of this posting then I would have been very turned off where it was handled much better in later pages.  Just a thought or two from someone who is starting to see apathy and rudeness in many of the replies from some of the team members for Dot Net Nuke.

Re: Anonymous posting

I'm developing a political site and the ability to allow users to post their opinions anonymously is very important.   Without this ability, the folks making the decisions on the look and feel of the site will probably scrap the forum completely.

I read the first 4 pages of this thread and came across Chris's thorough response so I wanted to just jump in for a minute.  The canned forum module is great but I feel that requiring folks to log in to post a message is a major shortfall and I'm curious why such functionality (parameter-driven), was never introduced in the early stages.   Assuming someone will be moderating and controlling the posts, I don't see any reason not to allow folks to post threads without being logged in.

In the case of this political website I'm doing, many people viewing the site will not be technically savvy enough to go through the registration process (or may choose not to provide their personal information), and as such, their voices will not be heard.

I'm frankly quite surprised that the developers of this module have not received sufficient "demand" from the user base for this parameter.  Please keep up the good work, but please put this on your 'to-do' list!
