Re: How to import or convert from other forums?
Why is there an import option when you have the forums installed then?

Where are you seeing this?  What version?  Are we talking about the same module?

The module configuration menu (small down arrow next to the title of the module).  This brings up a menu that has the option to "Import Content" as well as "Export Content".

There is no import feature available for this forum.  It is not on our roadmap.  We stand by our original statement that we are not going to do any data migration from one specific forum module to this one.

That is disappointing.  I was really hoping to use dnn to replace my maxwebportal install.  I'm now going to have to choose vBulletin and vAdvanced (they have an importer for about 30 different portals).  I really wanted to use an asp.net solution since I am a long-time classic asp developer and would have to learn some php to do any modifications.

Shame since this is really a great piece of software and shows a lot of promise for the future.  But I can't leave my data behind.

WebDev is right, those menu options do appear, which is what got me on this topic to begin with.  It seems that someone gave thought to an import feature for the forums.  So is that feature being crippled in the DNN version, or was it just never actually built.

Being this is an open source project, anyone can add this and distribute it as they wish.  It would not be horribly difficult and could function as a seperate module.  (Thus not needing to modify dnn or this forum codebase)

I might be willing to undertake the effort to write an import function -- if there is enough community demand for this to make it a viable commercial module.  My initial questions are

  1. What does everyone really want/need?  Is it just an Import function for the DNN forums?  Or is it a full Export from Current System, then Import into New System program?

  2. If it's the latter, what forums are most used in DNN today?  I'm familiar with the Active Forums.  What others are in highest need?

  3. How many people would really be interested in buying a reasonably priced module (or .NET program) that did this?
Please contact me directly if you'd like to discuss this in more detail.  If there is enough interest, I'll give it a shot.
