The method I am speaking of is creating a module, using Visual Studio.

I prefer a slightly modified version of this method:

You are correct, the tree is not accessible for custom-use, simply via an "Admin" or "Host" user.  I believe there are a couple of commercial modules out there that allow creation of menu's with the tree....but these would not help you create the tree with direct file-links (as I think you want).

Being a rookie, I didn't realize I could just stick my entire collapsable tree (written in javascript) in an Iframe with the links pointing to another Iframe.  Duh!
