Re: Can we use the JS MD5/SHA1 encryption algorithm to encrypt clear text password?

Hi Iadalang,

Looks like your post was truncated.

It appears that your network is not properly resolving your dev computer's hostname.  You can verify this at the command line by trying to ping the computer name and seeing if it resolves to an IP address.

Because of the myriad configurations possible on your intranet, it's unlikely I will be able to assist much in your debugging this particular problem.  You'll need to contact your network administrator for assistance here.  You probably just need a custom DNS entry (or perhaps to open up your local firewall to allow incoming traffic on port 80 and 443).

Re: Can we use the JS MD5/SHA1 encryption algorithm to encrypt clear text password?

OK, its a minor issue anyways and I'm not going to use WinXP on a production site anyway. My post was truncated, but I'd like to know what you mean by "root trust" issues and how to resolve them? Do you mean I'll have to export and import certs?

Is there any tool to let me see what's actually in the SSL stream? when I click submit on login?

Lastly, the Indian Gov. is not so poor as to not have SSL facility, they also have a Certifying Authority. But the issues I raised were on the assumption that they *might* not allow me that priviledge.

Re: Can we use the JS MD5/SHA1 encryption algorithm to encrypt clear text password?

Yep, because your self-generated certificate is not chained to a root authority trusted by default in IE/Firefox, you'll have to tell the browser that it's a from a valid source.  This means a cert import on each browser who uses the cert (alternatively you can just live with the warning).

You can use Fiddler to perform a man-in-the-middle trace of your SSL traffic, but this requires letting Fiddler swap the cert, which means that you'll get a few warnings while browsing secure pages.  That's the nature of SSL/TLS... it's difficult to intercept :)

I'm well-aware of how much wealth the Indian government has -- that's why I was flabbergasted that they wouldn't spring for a cert.  Having worked with the US government in the past, I also know how difficult it can be to get anything done.  Here's hoping that they *do* allow you the privilige of a shiny new certificate!
