Making use of the clientAPI in a simple module.

Jon,
Nice work with the editing of module titles. This is much, much, better then having to go into the module's settings.
I had a good idea for an application of your drag and drop functionality. I'm sure you have thought of this already but maybe I can persuade you to do it.
One thing that users complain about is the cumbersome method to order items in many modules. That is modules that have a view order. This is a 4 digit integer to sort on. Unless you plan your content like an old BASIC program and go in 10 number increments you can find yourself having to renumber the entire sequence.

What would be really cool is to be able to drag and drop the items within a module. For example the core links module. How good would it be to use your clientAPI to enable an admin to drag and drop the links around to change the order?

If possible this would be a great example to get working. Based on this more module developer could use the code to do the same or even more. Right now I'm not sure where to start. I build modules and would like to do more with them.

What would be super cool would be to utilise the Iportable interface to allow for items from the same type of module to be dragged and dropped into each other. For example move a link from one link module to another link module.

Unfortunately Iportable exports all the items but I guess this could be enhanced or worked around.

Anyway thanks for all the cool features of DNN, drag and drop and title editing. I am hoping to use AJAX in a project early next year. Keep up the good work. Let me know if i can help with anything.

John.

Re: Making use of the clientAPI in a simple module.

Glad you like it.

I have given some thought to using the clientapi for making it easier to reorder the pages and modules.  I had planned on adding functionality similar to what I did with the solpart menu module, which is to say that I want to allow the arrows to be used to reorg everything on the client side, then when the user is happy with the results, a button is pressed to persist the changes.

I hadn't considered DragNDrop for this, but it is an interesting idea...  Regarding the modules, I have spoken to some mod devs on features like this, not sure if any progress is being made yet.

Re: Making use of the clientAPI in a simple module.

Good hear you're thinking about it.
From my experience, which was an evolution from VB6 forms to windows forms to asp.net the whole clientside javascript is foreign yet very intriguing; the web is starting to get more and more features that are common place in the forms world.

Unfortunately I’m nice and busy with DotNetNuke sites, I’m sure you are too.

When I get some time I’ll have a go at the drag and drop arrangement of the links module. It will be a good learning exercise.

If (I’m sure I mean when) I get it working I’ll post you the details.

Thanks

John.
