Running ClientAPI sample in DNN 4.0.2 with VWD

I have downloaded the sample clientapi project and am trying to get it to work in DNN4 with VWD.  I presume the available version is designed for DNN3 (there is no readme.txt or install.txt, so I have to guess).

I can get it to clean compile and run with a few changes (codefile for codebehind, partial class, etc), but would welcome some brief guidance.  What is the difference between blue and red?  Are you supposed to put them on the same page?

I sometimes wonder if I have done right in trying to forge ahead with DNN4 when all the main DNN development still seems rooted in DNN3 and .NET 1.1

Thanks for any help.

John B

Re: Running ClientAPI sample in DNN 4.0.2 with VWD

The blue and red usercontrols are there to demonstrate the dynamic loading of controls working with the callback framework.  I blog on these enhancements here.  I suggest installing the module directly from the download to see what was intended...  I assume it works in 4.0 straight-away, but if not you can try it on DNN 3 first to see how it should work and use that as a way to obtain some more answers that my blog entry did not.

The reason you see development done in .NET 1.1 is that it will work with both 1.1 and 2.0.   If we develop in 2.0 we will end up needing to support two code bases...  like we do in the core.  Which we have someone devoting a lot of time to keeping things in sync.  Unforunately, my time is limited and there are many things with a higher priority.

I understand the pressures on your time and am grateful for the clientapi function.  I would just welcome the briefest of documentation for those of us who are still feeling our way with this environment.

When I have all working perfectly in DNN 4.0.2 I will package it up if you like so that others can install it as a DNN4 source module - the best way to learn.

Re: Running ClientAPI sample in DNN 4.0.2 with VWD
Hi John,
Did you get it to work?
I'd very much like to see your source code for the module.
If you've made any observations that could help others doing DNN402/VWD development on the ClientAPI, please share them

I've just started to look into the callback stuff myself.
It seems like the "Dotnetnuke Client API - ClientCallback" document is mostly written for people using visual studio - a few pointers for people doing visual web developer could be nice.
Here's one for a start:
If anyone out there is using VWD remember to add "using DotNetNuke.UI.Utilities;" in order to implement the IClientAPICallbackEventHandler as mentioned in step 1 of "what a developer needs to do" section of the Dotnetnuke Client API - ClientCallback document
My next concern is where one should place the javascript functionality - does it go into a file? And where should one place that file then? If anyone out there knows, please reply.... Otherwise I will when I find out
Best regards,
Johannes

I reget I did not spend time on this, but instead I got my own little app working using the ClientAPI and it is live at www.stodden.org/Church.  See the services page.  The code is supplied in another thread:
