Alphabetical sorting in database to support multi-lingual DNN sites

Hi,

I am using DNN v4.5.0 and Sql Server 2005 and need my site to support localization. SInce we are going to have many languages to support, i wanted to know as to how the sorting of the content in the database would be done? Should we use COLLATE functionality for the alphabetical sorting of data? Or is it something which can be done from DNN side?

Please do let me know your views on this.

Thanx in advance.

Re: Alphabetical sorting in database to support multi-lingual DNN sites

do not touch collation, since sorting is usually performed by business logic instead of database and you will experience problems, if you use other than default collation.

Re: Alphabetical sorting in database to support multi-lingual DNN sites

I had forgotten to mention that we are using "nvarchar" in the language fields. So in that case are you saying that a simple order by of that column will return the necessary alphabetical sorted order?

Please elaborate on this point.

Thanx.

Re: Alphabetical sorting in database to support multi-lingual DNN sites

the field to store the language key in, can be either nVarchar or varchar, since AFAIK it does not allow non-ASCII characters.

Sorting is usually done by the business logic, using sort specifications from UI locale, and not by database.

Re: Alphabetical sorting in database to support multi-lingual DNN sites

Can you give me some tips on how this can be achieved? Is it using the CultureInfo class of namespace "System.globalization"? and the "SortKey" class??

If possible, can you forward links where this is explained in detail.

Thanx in advance.
