I'm aware that this is an ancient thread, but thought that I should throw in that I have successfully enabled ASP.NET 2.0 localization to run side-by-side with DNN's custom implementation.  For anyone who is interested in accomplishing this, details are at http://brandonhaynes.org/GamePlan3/Default.aspx?tabid=489&EntryID=4.

A core recompile is necessary to get things running, but I have suggested a core improvement that would remove this requirement.  Work item is at http://support.dotnetnuke.com/issue/ViewIssue.aspx?id=7360&PROJID=2.

Hope this helps anyone who stumbles across this thread (as I did)!

Edit: Alex, responding (as usual) with super-human speed, moved my support item to the core project.  Updated url accordingly.
