3.3.5 to 4.8.2

I am trying to upgrade a site that has over 150 child portals.  After upgrade using install package as per http://www.mitchelsellers.com/Blogs/tabid/54/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/106/Upgrading-DNN-3x-to-DNN-4x.aspx, I get this error when I load the authentication page of a child site:
Error: is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Authentication.ActiveDirectory.Settings.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

AD Authentication does not function post upgrade.

Re: 3.3.5 to 4.8.2

Comment out all instances of <add name="Authentication".../> in the <httpModules> section. This should get your site up and running again.

Off the top of my head I can't remember if the .03 version was included in 4.8.2 package so check the Packages table in the database to see if that's the version installed. If not then you'll need to upgrade to at least that version (the 01.00.00 version has issues with 4.8.0 and above).

If it is the .03 version then my next question would be what else is displayed on the page? Are the dropdownlist boxes there but not populated? I've seen issues when upgrading from DNN 3 to DNN 4 where a value in the ModuleSettings table is causing the problem. I don't have a copy of the database handy so I can't post what the correct field and value should be at the moment. I'll await your answer (re: the dropdownlist boxes) and then go from there.

Modified By steve conard on 5/22/2008 7:18:52 AM)

Thanks Mike
Of the below notes, the change providers in module settings table (manual record change via db client) to DotNetNuke.Authentication.ActiveDirectory.ADSI.ADSIProvider, DotNetNuke.Authentication.ActiveDirectory was what removed this error.

A few notes for others in pursuit
Upgrade
use install 4.8.2 zip
follow instructions from http://www.mitchelsellers.com/Blogs/tabid/54/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/106/Upgrading-DNN-3x-to-DNN-4x.aspx
add auth 1.0.0.4 by install and replacing any instance of windowsSignin.aspx with one from 1.0.0.4 zip
remove old adsi dlls if they exist in bin
change providers in module settings table (manual record change via db client) to DotNetNuke.Authentication.ActiveDirectory.ADSI.ADSIProvider, DotNetNuke.Authentication.ActiveDirectory

web.config uncomment impersonate="true"  username="domain\username" password="somthingSilly"
site must be added to "trusted sites" on client browser

Works for me!

Thanks again Mike
