Optional Windows Authentication

I am trying to configure my site to allow users to visit the site publicly without requiring any sort of login. But I want to allow Windows Authenticated users from my company's staff to login using Active Directory credentials and allow certain people to edit certain content.

I've configured the Windows Authentication but now when I visit the site I receive the Windows popup login dialog. How can I avoid this and only require login when the Login link is selected? Currently I have turned off Anoonymous authentication only on the WindowsSignin.aspx file in the DesktopModules/AuthenticationServices/activeDirectory folder.

Thanks!

Re: Optional Windows Authentication

Ack! Please disregard. I had to turn off Windows Authentication for the site and that fixed it.

Re: Optional Windows Authentication

It did but it probably didn't. Leave authentication turned on but comment out the <add name="Authentication".... /> in your web.config. That will stop the Windows Login box from showing up for external users.

With that line commented out and when the user clicks the Login button they'll get two options, DNN Login and Windows Login. AD users select Windows Login and enter their credentials (Domain\username) and their password to get logged in (unless you implement this script (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/89/threadid/60815/scope/posts/Default.aspx) in the AuthenticationServices/ActiveDirectory/Login.ascx. If you're only going to allow AD users to login then you can disable the DNN signin (note: make sure to promote an AD account to SuperUser status in the Users table first). Then only the Windows Login box will appear.

The next version will have an enhancement that allows internal users to be logged in automatically but external users browse normally.

Re: Optional Windows Authentication

Yea, the login problem cropped back up. I followed the instruction about commenting the line in the web.config and that fixed it fixed it. I also have no need for the DotNetNuke auth. at this time and turned it off (after promoting an account as you mentioned) and I think things are looking great. I'll look forward to the update that auto-passes credentials.

Thanks Mike, and thanks a ton for the fast responses.
