Intro to Active Directory and DNN

I've got a client that was all set to go with a DNN website, and they've recently brought up the possibility of implementing Active Directory into the picture. I can create a website with DNN, but I don't have any expertise in Active Directory, nor the time to become one. Any suggestions where to start? Are there any resources for finding perhaps an independent subcontractor that could come in and be the AD expert? I'm mainly trying to give the client a cost estimate for connecting this system with Active Directory.

Thanks, Mike

Re: Intro to Active Directory and DNN

Active Directory module has been included into DNN core since version 3.2. Follow these step to make it works.

  • Admin Settings: Logon as Admin, go to Admin/Authentication page to configure Windows Authentication
  • IIS Settings:  In IIS Manager find /Admin/Security/WindowsSignin.aspx, then right click and bring up Properties page of this file to configure File Security access, NOT allow anonimous access to this file (clear the check box of Anonimous Access)
  • Enable Authentication httpmodule in Web.config: remove the comment at authentication httpmodule (<httpmodules> section) in Web.config

    <add name="Authentication" type="DotNetNuke.HttpModules.AuthenticationModule, DotNetNuke.HttpModules.Authentication" />

Re: Intro to Active Directory and DNN

Tam,

Thank you for this helpful information.  I'm in a similar position to Mike and I have lot of questions.  Can you perhaps point me to a post or a document that gives an overview of this module?  I need to understand the basics of what it's doing and how it works.  For example: how are Active Directory roles related to DNN roles?  Can you use both ASPNET and AD authentication at the same time?  How does lost password work for an AD user?  Etc, etc.  I'm pretty fluent with DNN, just starting to work with DNN4, but am just learning about Active Directory.  I assume an overview exists, I just cannot find it.

Thanks for all your hard work on this module!

Re: Intro to Active Directory and DNN

Good info. Now our problem is that we cannot get authenticated users to be automatically added to the DNN security roles; these were created to match the Active Directory groups. How can we make this work?
