Modified By Carlos Rodriguez on 3/21/2008 11:36:20 AM)

Daniel:

I tried a lot of different things, even recreating the albums from scratch, and still the same problem.  I ended up installing the free Gallery module from www.jegers.com.  It works well even though is has the popup ad.  I intend to use it like that until the new Gallery module is released, which should be soon.  Otherwise I would buy it.  You can see the Gallery with the Jegers module in the following link: www.collegeparkjudo.org.

I also wanted to ask you if your Gallery was working fine and then suddenly started having problems.  In my case I think that my problems coincided with me making some changes to the albums plus the installation of the March patches from Microsoft.

Re: Some albums mess up the styles for whole page

I was able to reproduce the problem. What we're running into is the following "quirk" in IE: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262161  - after the first 30 style tags on an HTML page, IE ignores the rest.

I was able to prove this by hand editing a page and simply combining the styles into fewer style tags.

So where are the styles coming from? It's all of those numerous popup menu controls when you're in standard (album) view - add enough albums and sooner or later this problem will appear in IE.

I built my own version of the component that hides the menus in standard view, and it resolves the problem as well.

Matthias (I hope you see this) - this is something to watch for going forward as well, and perhaps to notify the main team. It looks to me that the menu styles are being generated in the core, not in the gallery code - thus this represents a fundemental limit on the number of menus you can use on a page. Unless (as I expect is likely), there are ways to avoid it (say, by using a style sheet and class - I haven't dug deeply enough into the menu system to know if there is a better solution).

Also, the private version I created also solves the friendly URL issue with the current version. I know you're focused on the new gallery (which is fine, that's why I like open source). But if you have any interest in the modifications I've made, I'll be glad to send them along.

Dan, thanks for taking the time to track this one. I will scalate the query to the Core Team to validate it. Is it possible that you post a detailed step by step reproduction of the issue in Gemini?

Dan:

That is very interesting.  Were you testing with IE7???  I noticed that the article you found does not include v7.  In any case, the way the "old" Gallery rendered the menus and the styles for them is not very efficient (or clean) in my opinion, I hope the new version handles it differently.  I checked the Jegers Gallery Module rendered HTML and it only uses the link to the module CSS.

Well, hopefully my headaches with this latest problem with the Gallery module are good for something after all...

Thank you for the follow up.
