Beta 2 to Final-Possible?

Question, if I start a test Gallery with the new Beta 2, can I count with the RC or Final to be able to update with no problems?  Will I loose my work?  I mean, if I'm going to test for real I need to reproduce a whole Gallery with several albums.

Thank you for all your effort.

Carlos

Sorry the beta versions can not upgraded to the release versions.  This is way we say only for non production environments!  This is by design, about on a upgrade files with the same version will not deleted and so can not be updated.

Re: Beta 2 to Final-Possible?

Matthias:

Okay, let me see if I understand this, you are saying that there are no real technical reasons to provide a migration path from Beta to Final?  That it is an arbitrary decision by the Gallery team to prevent this and break any Gallery created with a Beta version when the final is installed, just to avoid people from using Beta software for production?  Is this what you are saying?

In that case I will not test until the final version is available.  This is for two reasons, first, this means that the final version will have new code execution paths that have not been thoroughly tested, as it will only be available in the Final release to break sites running on Beta software.  And the second and most important reason is that I do not agree with the Gallery team's logic and decision of breaking Gallery implementations done with the Beta version.  That is counter productive, I cannot understand you guys dedicating time to design, develop, and test code just to prevent people from running Beta software for production, this is totally wasted time.  What is the added value of this?  Just so that you can cover your rears?  Bigger companies with more complex and serious software give you the warning of not using Beta software for production but if you do it is your problem.  And also, being a open source project, when the final comes out with source code we can remove the code to break the sites using Beta and recompile, bypassing your poorly thought out design to prevent people from using the Beta for production.  This can also be made public.

And notice that my intention is not to run Beta software for production but instead to start creating albums now with no public access and then apply the final when it becomes available.  In this way I could do testing and get the Gallery ready for production, but the short sighted logic of the Gallery team to break albums made with the Beta prevents this.  Therefore I cannot test until the Final release comes out, I want to do realistic testing with all the albums I need to create, not play with the module and then destroy the test albums.

Another suggestion, please proof-read your posts before you finish them, they are very difficult to understand.  And by the way, my first language is not English either, which is why I am very careful when I write.

Re: Beta 2 to Final-Possible?

Hmmm, silence. The fact that my post has been intentionally ignored actually says a lot.

I hope that other members of the community understand that the Galleries they create with the Beta will break when the final version is installed.

Honestly, I still cannot understand what the big deal is. Okay, the previous version of the Gallery was Beta and everybody used it for production, generating a lot of grief and support posts. But you have to remember that the project was in limbo for a long time, that this situation was because of legitimate reasons, true. But still, the community was lacking a Gallery core module and the Beta was the only choice available. And the many newcomers to DNN during that period of time did not necessarily know all this, so they just went ahead and installed the Gallery module. Plus, nobody answered the many posts requesting a status report and clarification of the situation for a long time either, I know, I was there.

Okay, that’s history, now back to the future. If the current Gallery team actually intends to release a final, production ready version of the Gallery module, and I honestly believe they do, why cripple the Beta and break galleries when the final is installed? Why not provide a smooth upgrade path? After all, the biggest incentive for users to not use the Beta is to have the final release version available. I don’t know, this makes sense to me.

Re: Beta 2 to Final-Possible?

Hi Carlos,

on this version your content of gallery is care, but not for the next releases about we will adding a DAL.  And then we have also the problem, that changes on the database scripts want not run on same version no.  It is not that we want prevent users to use it on production environments, but it is the Design, and not to the Gallery module only.  All modules with a DAL can't be upraded from the beta version, if there where changes done.

In this version you can look in the Gallery Configuration to save your content folder and then after uninstall and install the new Gallery you can changed back to the content folder in the Configuration.  So you can starting with uploading files and folders.  But know this will not run in future versions.
