Trackback? 
I'm a little curious.  Precisely what am I supposed to put in the Trackback url box when I create a new blog entry?  The url pointing back to a blog I'm commenting on or a url for others to use to point back to my blog?  If it's the latter, what url am I supposed to use?  If it's the former, just how many blogs actually provide links I can paste in to make use of this feature.  Is there a way to turn this feature off?

Trackback is a feature which works in two different modes.

  • Client mode
  • Server mode

Client mode

The client mode is, that you send a Trackback ping to another blog to what you make a reference in your blog entry. For that feature you must enter the trackback url of the remote blog you are referencing in your blog in the Trackback url textbox of your blog entry.

Server mode

The server mode is working in backgorund. If somebody writes a blog entry which refers to a blog entry in your blog, and he use the trackback link of your blog entry the trackback ping of the other user pings your trackback url in the background. If you have enabled anonymous comments in your blog settings the trackback ping of the remote site creates a trackback comment in your blog entry.

Thanks.  So having anonymous comments disabled prevents someone who trackback's my blog from having their comments appear on my site.  Excellent.  That concerned me.  I'd not be surprised if someone hasn't already built a spider program that goes around looking for trackback links and then uses them to spam blogs that allow public comments via trackback.  When googling the word  trackback I found several blogs where people were getting so many spam comments appear on thier sites via trackback pings that they had decided to disable it entirely.

From the next version on you have more control over the comments and trackbacks.

I have extend the setup so that you can enable anonymous comments and and trackbacks in separate settings.

And I have implemented an comment approval system, which allows you to setup that comments from (users, anonymous and trackbacks) must be approved before they will shown no your web site.
