DotNetNuke® Project :: Announcements Module

The announcements module is a basic module used for displaying news items on your site. During all DotNetNuke® versions, the module did not change very much, but starting from DNN 3.3.0, some new features have been added, with more to come.

Recently, the module was upgraded to ASP.NET 2.0, and requires DotNetNuke 4.6.2 to run. Currently the features are:

  • Abillity to add multiple announcements in one module
  • Support for ISearchable (Search and RSS)
  • Basic support for IPortable (Module import an export)
  • Items are templatable. Parsing of the templates is done by the DotNetNuke core token replace functionality

For the year 2008, the following new features will be implemented:

  • Paging
  • Inline detail view
  • Categories and / tags
  • Enhanced RSS feeds

... or how I learned an old lesson: always check whether the name of the module you release doesnt actually exist somewhere else.

Today i received a mail from a fellow DNN Developer, asking to rename the UserSwitcher module to something else, as they have been selling that module for a long time now. I usually actually check to see if a module name already exists, as it is very confusing to end users to have different modules with the same name.

Anyhow, I changed the name to IdentitySwitcher (quick search on Google didn's show any results...). If you downloaded the module already, please download the new version, and uninstall the old version (As there might be a naming conflict i cannot delete modules named "UserSwitcher"

You can download the module here: http://www.codeplex.com/identityswitcher

Please remember to vote for the project :)

Re: Goodbye UserSwitcher hello IdentitySwitcher ...

I have used user switcher. It is very handy.
To make identity switcher useful it of course would need to be secure.
This is more important than it being easy to use.

Something else is that I think it should be a skin object and its presence on a page should be very subtle. An Icon that when clicked will expand your selection.

Re: Goodbye UserSwitcher hello IdentitySwitcher ...

IdentitySwitcher is secure, in so far that you can decide what users see the module. I would never put such a module on a live site, because there will always be a small chance that someone makes a mistake in the module permissions, which could give people unwanted access to the module.

Making it a skin object is an option, but then again... that would mean that you are thinking about putting the module on a live site!?

Re: Goodbye UserSwitcher hello IdentitySwitcher ...

great module. Please add settings to display username or combination of First Name and Last Name. Sometimes it is harder to remember someone by username, specially on large sites.
