DotNetNuke® Project :: Blog Module

Weblog (aka "blog") is arguably one of the most popular categories of applications on the Internet today.  Naturally, this makes a Blog module a very important part of the DotNetNuke family of free BSD modules.  The DotNetNuke® Blog is actually a collection of related modules which comprise all the working parts of a Blog.  When you add the blog module to a page,  you actually add all of them (which you can choose to delete or move).  These presently include:

  • Menu: List of blog related actions that a user can take, based on permissions (e.g. changing settings, adding a post, etc).
  • Search: Utility for searching Blog content.
  • Roll: List of blogs on the site (or in some logical grouping)
  • Archive: Calendar indicating dates when blogs have been posted
  • Posts: Display of the lists and content of the blogs.

This blog module was contributed to DotNetNuke (and thus to you) by Hans-Peter Schelian, who based his work on a blog module originally developed by Matt Fraser for version 1.x.  Thanks to Matt for his initial vision, and to Hans-Peter for giving it continued life in version 2.x and 3.x.

Identification Icons

Identification icons are quickly becoming a popular way for bloggers to encourage responsible use of blog comments.  A variety of solutions are available, all of which aim to provide useful benefits to the blog reader.

Identification icons allow blog readers to personalize their posts just like a forum avatar.  The additional personalization may encourage responsible posting as well as increased commenting and discussion.  Identification icons prevent users from impersonating one another, leading to more responsible posting.  They also may prevent flaming, since a user tied to an identification icon will have to take additional steps to obfuscate their identity.

Version 3.4.1 of the Blog module supports all popular identification options available today:

  • Gravatar
  • Identicon
  • Wavicon
  • MonsterID

Gravatar, or Globally Recognized Avatar, provides an easy service that allows users to upload an image avatar that follows them from site to site.  This simple solution ties the image to an email address, providing a very easy way for blog software to retrieve the image.

Identicons, Wavicons, and MonsterIDs are automatically generated images that can be used in place of a Gravatar in the event that the user does not want to create one.  These images are generated by a hash of the user's email address (or IP address, in the event that the user chooses not to enter an email address).

One feature that may be unique to DotNetNuke is the ability for the user to instantly preview their image in the comments section before submitting their comments.  As soon as the user enters their email address and tabs out of the email field, their Gravatar (or other icon) will automatically display in a preview area.  As far as we know, this preview capability doesn't exist in any other blogging platform.

Other Comments Changes

We've included a few other improvements to the comments area as well:

  • Users can now enter a website address with their comment.  This feature can be enabled or disabled by the blog owner
  • Blog owner can show or suppress unique comment titles
  • Blog owner's comments have a unique CSS tag, enabling them to stand out from other comments

Many thanks to Rip Rowan and Don Worthley for this great new feature.

Re: Upcoming Blog Features Part 3: Comments, Gravatars, and more!

Antonio, this is awesome. I hope this will find a way into core some day, as I would appreciate gravatars everywhere: Userprofile, Forum, ...

Re: Upcoming Blog Features Part 3: Comments, Gravatars, and more!

Antonio - I really like where the team is taking the blog module. Before i would never consider using it - but these last few releases and the upcoming features make it one of the mode valuable modules for DNN.

One thing to consider for things like avatars is that many DNN Admin already use some kind of membership profile modules for social networking sites. Many of these support URLs to user uploadable avatars which can be used around the site. For example I use Smart Thinker's profile for membership and avatars - but can display a member's avatar (that links to their profile) on Active Forum posts, Ventiran News Articles, BizModules Videos, etc. All of these use a templating model that allows my to insert a url to an image and the module replaces the key value [USERID] to display the correct avatar and link.

I'm sure Cambrian has something planned for core profiles - but it would terrific to see this concept supported at some basic level in blogs. Perhaps an option under "custom avatar" to enter a url with a token that is replaced at runtime showing the correct avatar:

http://www.mydnnsite/desktopmodules/thridpartyuserprofiles/pics/[USERID]. Adding a link back to the member profile would only make this stronger.

Again - thanks for the great work on blogs. It's terrific to see this kind of energy and quality on a core module.

Re: Upcoming Blog Features Part 3: Comments, Gravatars, and more!

Kudos team! This is great stuff. I'll echo what Airstream365 said; in the past, the Blog Module had so much potential but was lacking in some features that required us to integrate dotText/subText for our community. However, functionality like this makes this a very cool solution and very viable for our primary blogging! Keep up the great work - it is VERY much appreciated!

Re: Upcoming Blog Features Part 3: Comments, Gravatars, and more!

I feel like I am watching a late night commercial for some "As Seen on TV" product. "But wait, there's more!" "And if you order now..." I cannot believe all of this is coming in the next release. I am emotionally exhausted now after reading these three blog entries about *ahem* blogs. I cannot wait!
