DotNetNuke® Project :: Chat Module
This is the homepage for the DotNetNuke Chat Module. The module is "in progress" and while we do have quite a list of features we'd like in it, we're focussing on creating a working basic version first.

Finally, way too long  after my previous blog post I can finally announce that version 00.05.00 has been submitted to the release tracker. Functionality hasn't changed much since the previous post, but some things in the background did. While working on a module like this, one always finds new places to improve the module . I'm glad we have been able to draw a line and get something out there at last. There's a few known limitations that you might run into:

  • Borders on selectors for emoticons (and others) don't show up nicely in IE.
  • ... (ok, well, there's one I can think of at the moment )

Currently it's a pretty basic chat module which facilitates a chat forpeople that have browsed to the same page on a website. A short summary of it's current functions:

  • send / receive messages (duh)
  • notify users when a user arrives or leaves
  • allows some basic formatting of messages
  • supports authorisation settings using standard module settings
  • configurable polling interval
  • uses DNN's builtin ajax library (so no asp.net AJAX needed)
  • ...

For the future we (of course) have quite  few ideas what should be in the module. We believe there's quite a few functions  a chat module could have:

  • List of people in the chat
  • Allow storage of chat transcripts (and reading them of course)
  • Downloadable transcripts
  • Searchable (portable) transcripts
  • Private chats
  • Different "rooms"
  • ...

And here's where we would like you to kick in: let us know what you like (or dislike, but be nice ) about the module and what you would prefer to see in a future release.

Re: First Public Beta Submitted

Please give some clue to what you are blogging about in the title. These blogs are not always seen in the context you created them.

First Public Beta Submitted of WHAT?

It wasn't until the third paragraph that I really knew what was being submitted.

Sorry to pick on you, but this is a regular occurrence on the DNN blogs.

I subscribe to the blogs "All recent entries" feed so I can see what's going on. It's hard to tell when the subject line just reads "First Public Beta Submitted"

Just add "of Chat Module"

Re: First Public Beta Submitted

Yes please do this. No doubt this post has received a lot of page views b/c folks may think it is about the DNN 5.0 beta...

Re: Chat Module: Public Beta Submitted

Thanks. I changed the title of the blog post. I think the problem is that someone like me is actually blogging in my own project blog. In that contet it's pretty obvious what I'm blogging about. But since the aggregated blog page doesn't show the blog title it can be quite confusing indeed.

Now stop picking on me :-)

Re: Chat Module: Public Beta Submitted

Hi, guys! Thank you for your work! Actually I'll be happy to use your module on my site and to become your beta tester in this way. But where can I download it?

Please, give direct ref if possible.
