DotNetNuke® Project :: Events Module

The DotNetNuke® Events Module is a module which produces a display of upcoming events as a list in chronological order or in calendar format. Events may have additional information and links can be set to automatically expire on a particular date, or re-occur by any specified number of days, weeks, months or years.

SHORT TERM ROADMAP -- Q3 2008

The objective of the upcoming release 04.01.00 will be flexibility in the display and design (templating, themes), and easier distribution of events data (e.g. RSSFeeds). If time allows, we also want to improve the data and  table structure as well, to enable enhancements in the future.

A complete list of issues at hand can be found in Gemini for Events. The team is working hard to complete this list and serious progress is being made. Stay tuned!

The Events team is active. More then 50 issues have been solved in the last 4-8 weeks, the new version 04.00.00 is ready for the release tracker. While some of the members are still working on the test script needed for the release process, others keep generating ideas for enhancing the module. It is difficult to limit ourselves to bug fixing only. Enhancements already slipped in. We get more and more feeling for the structure of this (complex) module and it seems easier to create enhancements in addition to the bug fixes. But we have to hold back, since every new feature makes new testing necessary and will certainly delay the delivery.

We have made the release version available on our testsite: www.DNNEvents.net. And although about 200 people have downloaded the last RC version, we find it disappointing that almost none of the downloaders provided feedback on the new release, althought we spend quit some time do work out all test cases.

Did the new verison work out for you? Please let us know. It will help us to create a better Events module for you.

Re: Limiting yourself in coding is difficult

You guys are doing such an incredible job, updating this module. I have always felt the events module was one of the lesser of the dotnetnuke modules. So many people are using google calendar controls in their websites--so I am hopeful that the development will continue and this will become a more visually appealing and user friendly module.

Yes, you'r right. I feel with you. For us it was the same with our User Directory Module.

Re: Limiting yourself in coding is difficult

I wish I had time to do some testing here....

I think ultimately the most feedback gets provided after full release whether we like it or not.

Re: Limiting yourself in coding is difficult

Gentleman,

First and foremost, thank you for all your efforts with this module. You should all be proud of the progress of the RC!! The evolution of the Events module is a breath of fresh air and light year beyond the current module. I understand the urge to consistently add functionality, I would love to see an “All Day Event”. However, I would far prefer the ability to deploy the new Events module ASAP. I feel it is that good.

RE: Feedback
I think the issue may have to do with perception. I was shocked today to hear that only 200 had downloaded the RC. That fills me with a sense of obligation to help. Many smaller developers may feel “Well, I’m sure that already saw this issue” with thousands of beta testers… Many just get an error and wait for the next RC. I understand, that is not the spirit of Beta, however, many small developers have only ever done beta for Goliath software companies who don’t respond. I hear your call and will be more responsive and ask other who help make a difference regardless of size or skill set to share their experiences.

Again thanks for all you do. I am excited about the future of DNN Events…

Re: Limiting yourself in coding is difficult

One issue I would like to raise is the need to make modules like this XHTML compliant. Things like adding a type="text/javascript" in certian places and using lover case letters/closing of tags; very simple to do but a heck of a pain for developers who have to upload in VS the Solution File (which is not included in the latest zip source file which is another issue that should be addressed), make the changes to the code buy manual hunting with a search tool, then recompile the thing and re up the new DLL. I feel that if you made a module like this XHTML compliant (or as close to it as you can) it would help the uptake of it as currently other alternatives exist out there which are more XHTML compliant. Having to make a module XHTML compliant is a common thing now and putting some attention to this now would greatly help developers and the usability of this module. The functionality of his module is good through I must say.

EPT> Thank your for your comment. Good point. We will take this into account for the next release. We did fix some XHTML problems, but did not check it consistently on all points. Our first and main objective was to stabilize, migrate and fix all known bug-issues. These objectives are relevant to all uses of the module.
