DotNetNuke® Project :: Events Module

The DotNetNuke® Events Module is a module which produces a display of upcoming events as a list in chronological order or in calendar format. Events may have additional information and links can be set to automatically expire on a particular date, or re-occur by any specified number of days, weeks, months or years.

SHORT TERM ROADMAP -- Q3 2008

The objective of the upcoming release 04.01.00 will be flexibility in the display and design (templating, themes), and easier distribution of events data (e.g. RSSFeeds). If time allows, we also want to improve the data and  table structure as well, to enable enhancements in the future.

A complete list of issues at hand can be found in Gemini for Events. The team is working hard to complete this list and serious progress is being made. Stay tuned!

The Events module will be enhanced and improved over time. We have good and very good ideas to do this. But the current Events module is using a table structure that has some flaws (see my forum post for the details) and we want to correct this before moving on. We need table statistics of real life usage to decide on the what and the how.

Enthousiastic as I am, I could not wait and prepared a newsletter for our beta testers telling something about the progress on the module and explicity asking them for help: please execute a small SQL script (which was provided) from the host menu and send us back to results. Time needed to do this? 10-20sec? 30? Well if you are w o r k i n g   v e r y   s l o w l y,   i t   m i g h t   b e   6 0 s e c ,   m a x.

That action filled most of my Saterday evening, sitting on my chair, laptop on my lap, top! Over 250 e-mails were send from our beta site (www.DNNEvents.net), late in the evening.

As a young boy on his 5 th birthday (which is less then 10% of reality) I rose early in the morning to watch my mailbox, expected it to be flooded with the resulting statistics e-mails. WHAT? Only 1 e-mail on this point. Yes you read it correctly: 1 (one, een, uno, ein, un, it, bir, unos). Is my connection down? Mailbox kaput? Internet not working? No, nothing at all, just 1 e-mail, no more.

Well, I reasoned, let's make it more public: put it in a forum posting. That will certainly attract the attention of Events users. Almost a day has gone by. And I received 1 extra respons. From a fellow team member.

Sighh.. Why am I doing this. IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?

Over 500.000 people registered at this site, surely there must be more then 2 who are willing to spend 30sec to give feedback? This is OPEN SOURCE you know, where people donate there time for the benefit of all. And I, you, he, she, we form the "all". Get in action. Do something for the community, which is also yours truly selfs.

Re: Hello, where are you, users of the Events module?

Yes someone is out here. I didn't see this before but will run your little bitty script and send you the results. We use the stinkin events module and it needs help badly. I'll cook you breakfast if you fix it!

Re: Hello, where are you, users of the Events module?

I too, am out here. I just happened to see the email requesting this. Be calm or you'll lose all your hair, I’ll send you the email. I really appreciate the work done with the events module. I decided not to use this module in the past because of the bugs. But now I have to say, you've really done a great job on this last release. And remember that no news can be good news...

EPT> Thank for your comment. I am rather calm most of the time, not losing my hair (apart from what's considered normal in my age), but certainly want to get the feeling that we (the team) are spending time for the benefit of all. Not getting any respons is disapponting. So getting this sort of response is reassuring. Thanks.

Re: Hello, where are you, users of the Events module?

Yes we are out there, but we don't have real world data. We have attempted (before your changes) to deploy the module, but it was too bugy and rigid to go live. Do you have an idea of how many production install of this module are out there ? Continue the good work! This module is an important one!

EPT> Thanks for your words. It's nice to experience that we are not alone. I do not have any clue how many productions sites there are with the Events module. A mighty interesting question. But I assure you: when our team continues to do what we intend to do, there will be more! ;-)

Re: Hello, where are you, users of the Events module?

Ernst its not that we don't want to help, or are just reaping your teams hard work and not assisting. Its just till RC2 of events module no one could use it. Since RC2 I have released it on 10 of my clients, and all my new clients only get the RC3 release of the calendar as an option. HOWEVER since its only been 2 WEEKS since I have been able to put RC3 out on all my clients, they haven't had any time to really use it / start developing with it. Having host rights to all my clients I check in to see when they start using / filling out the calendar. So far I have 1 client that has slammed the calendar and one that is starting to. Both with smiling faces all thanks to you guys. Big Props to your team. I hope to release the new events module to my other clients but they refuse to allow the install till it becomes the new official version. IE passes the tracker. My point is don't think we are not interested in helping you guys out, cause heaven knows I really want a solid core events module instead of paying some awful price for something that is just a small step up from the core. I just think the community hasn't had the chance to really incorporate RC3 into their sites and start using it with real data just yet.I have the RC3 installed on my dev box and QA box with tons of dummy data, but its not well formated, nor does it have links setup, or much information, or long text put in place. Point is the data would be pretty useless cause its just line after line of test. Where as my 1 client so far has all sorts of unique links, images, color coding, etc going on. Cause its production. I will work on getting you that info later today, but I had to approve it with them before I could send it off. Once again much praise to you and your team, if I ever get to become a full sponsor I'm telling Shawn you and your team should get a free trip with my money. Cause you guys deserve it.

EPT> There is life in the DNN Universe after all!
Tnx for your feedback. It's rewarding to get a response. And that is not only for me, but for my fellow team members as well, all new to the Events module since March this year. We inherited a lot (good, bad and ugly) and worked hard for you (and ourselves) to a more usable module. Feedback form the community is essential.
Fair share of warning from the team: RC's are not intended to be used in production.

Re: Hello, where are you, users of the Events module?

Guys, as someone who has contributed a little to the new version of the module, I appreciate your support.

Note from EPT> Roger has done more than any of you can think of for this version! <

For those who haven't implemented a version prior to 4.0.0 (or 4.0.1 when it comes out), this script isn't really for you. What we are trying to get a sense of is what the state of the data is like in older version implentations (i.e. one that started life on 3.3.8 or older, even if it has now been upgraded). Maybe after 4.0.0 has been out for a while, it maybe worth running the script, to see if there are any issues coming up in the code. We have tested hard, but no-one is perfect. The current data model, allows for all types of inconsistencies in the data, even if the code doesn't. So we want to see the state of data in place, so we can plan the right remdial action, before improving the data model.Hopefully this makes sense.

Re: Hello, where are you, users of the Events module?

We attempted to implement the events module quite sometime ago, while it would have suited a real world application we could not use it due to timezone issues when daylight saving was concerned - it curently is not suitable for international events as the dates and times create more issues for users than it is worth. Having worked through the code we could not see any simple solution as part of the problem is the underlying DotNetNuke's implementation of timezones.

EPT> We (the Events team) have decided that we are not in the position to support TZ/DST correctly until the DNN core implements this support. As you have found as well. Sorry, we will have to wait for the next era of DNN.

Re: Hello, where are you, users of the Events module?

EPT> Re TZ/DST fully understand and agree with this as It would be totally incorrect to have individual modules implement this core function and break extensibility etc - I did spend a lot of time trying to address this for the events module - but came to the same conclusions as the events team. Hopefully the solution is only a matter of time

Re: Hello, where are you, users of the Events module?

I've used the Events module since DNN 3 and it's worked well for us. It's now on maybe 70 websites for us and I have few complaints. Of course our target users are not web pros so simple is good for us. When modules get too complex with too many op
