DotNetNuke® Project :: FAQs Module

FAQ Project

The FAQ module allows you to create a list of questions & answers. All questions are hyperlink buttons and will expand when clicked on. Only one answer is displayed at any given time.

If one throw a lot of brainstorming on the project, it can grow to become both a complex and functionality-rich module. I think a better approach would be to implement a few desireable features first and capture feedback on the path forward for the module.

Here are the first features that we will include in the next version of the FAQ project.

  • Use the ClientAPI to avoid postbacks when clicking on a question. A positive side effect of this will be that multiple answers can be viewed simultaneously.
  • Allow for the ability to change the View Order of individual questions. Preferably using a visual interface.
  • Allow for the ability to hide questions instead of deleting them.

Here are some other goals open for discussion for the long run after these inital features are implemented.

  • Submit Questions
  • Categories
  • Metadata
  • Workflows
  • Search Filter
  • Skinning
  • Multiple Views
  • Attach relevant links
  • Knowledge Base

FAQ Module v3.3 released. This module will upgrade the built-in FAQ module. Some features was removed from the beta to have it fully stable, but AJAX, Templates, Ordering & Categories are still there.

  • AJAX mode is optional and can be turned on in module settings. For slow web sites you can also setup a loading template to give some feedback to the user while retrieving the result from the server.
  • The FAQ items can be ordered by popularity or date.
  • The Category field is optional, but can be displayed in the Faq Item Template. Future versions will have filtering by category.
  • The module supports templating of Q/A and a token based approach for injecting the various data items.
  • List of tokens include [QUESTION], [ANSWER], [USER], [VIEWCOUNT], [CATEGORYNAME], [CATEGORYDESC], [DATECREATED], [DATEMODIFIED], [INDEX]
  • FAQ module stores the Click Count on a particular FAQ item.

The module has been tested successfully on several DotNetNuke 3.3 and 4.3 installations.

The testing feedback and bug reporting from the community was an important part of the development cycle in this release. So thanks to all of you.

Re: FAQ Module v3.3 released.

Good job Jan + team - does this work on earlier versions of DNN - eg. 3.2.0 or is it x.3.x only?

Re: FAQ Module v3.3 released.

It runs fine on 3.2.2 aswell, but because of the AJAX functionality it's difficult to ensure further backwards compatibility.

Re: FAQ Module v3.3 released.

I am running it on 3.2.2 and the AJAX is working. However, there is no ability to collapse a question back. I don't know if it works this way by design, or if this is a bug. I would think that by clicking on an already expanded question, one whose answer is displayed, the answer should collapse back.

It works like this by design.

There is a bug on dnn4.3.4 . If I give a question so the module will the answer too. How can so the page visitor give a answer on thire question?

Re: FAQ Module v3.3 released.

Have a bug on DNN 4.3.4 !

If any gives an question the module says "You must insert a Answer!" . How can give a user only a question?

And I am missing the categories.

Matthias
