DotNetNuke® Project :: FAQs Module

FAQ Project

The FAQ module allows you to create a list of questions & answers. All questions are hyperlink buttons and will expand when clicked on. Only one answer is displayed at any given time.

If one throw a lot of brainstorming on the project, it can grow to become both a complex and functionality-rich module. I think a better approach would be to implement a few desireable features first and capture feedback on the path forward for the module.

Here are the first features that we will include in the next version of the FAQ project.

  • Use the ClientAPI to avoid postbacks when clicking on a question. A positive side effect of this will be that multiple answers can be viewed simultaneously.
  • Allow for the ability to change the View Order of individual questions. Preferably using a visual interface.
  • Allow for the ability to hide questions instead of deleting them.

Here are some other goals open for discussion for the long run after these inital features are implemented.

  • Submit Questions
  • Categories
  • Metadata
  • Workflows
  • Search Filter
  • Skinning
  • Multiple Views
  • Attach relevant links
  • Knowledge Base

Scott Hanselman and Jan Blomquist

Attending this years MVP Summit was a great experience. Finally the opportunity to hook up with the DNN Core Team. Also had a long chat with Scott Hanselman (to the left), maybe one of the most influental people in the asp.net community. I've read his blog for many years now and if you haven't, you can find it here: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/

The new and improved FAQ module was released and can be used along the latest version of DotNetNuke and I am quite pleased with the result. Don't forget to put the FAQ module in AJAX mode (settings) and add your own styles.

In fact, making ajax easy to develop has been something that has caught my attention for a long time and I am pleased to announce that the Gaia Ajax Widgets 2007 Q2 was released today. The difference between Gaia and most other frameworks is that Gaia mirrors System.Web on the client and once a control is constructed it is never rendered again. In other words, state is never lost on the client.

This has huge implications and if you haven't checked out Gaia yet, you can download a free version here: www.ajaxwidgets.com

I have also created a quick introduction video that demonstrates Gaia and shows the semantic differences. You can view the video here: http://ajaxwidgets.com/videos/introduction_to_gaia_flash/default.html

Re: MVP Summit, Hanselman, The FAQ & AJAX

Hey Jan,
Could you please assist with getting these control to work on DotNetNuke 4.5.0. I just bought them. When I use them in my control, dotnetnuke return a black page, if the page contain any of these controls.

Re: MVP Summit, Hanselman, The FAQ & AJAX

The developers will get immediate knowledge of your problem if you use the forums or contact form on www.ajaxwidgets.com site. I know of DNN modules developed using this toolkit I am sure your issue will be given high priority

Re: MVP Summit, Hanselman, The FAQ & AJAX

With the proliferation of AJAX toolkits and frameworks available, it is very likely that some of them will conflict if they are used together on the same page. This was the main reason why we decided to "standardize" on the ASP.NET AJAX framework in DotNetNuke 4.5 - to try and encourage developers to gravitate towards a single AJAX library and try to avoid potential conflicts, which are often very difficult to diagnose and debug. This may not be the case with the specific toolkit suggested by Jan, however, his advice to contact the creator of the toolkit is appropriate as DotNetNuke will only be tested for compatibility with the ASP.NET AJAX framework as we move forward.
