DotNetNuke® Project :: Firebird® Provider

DotNetNuke can currently be run on at least two database platforms - Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. In the 2x days of DotNetNuke, it was also possible to run DotNetNuke using Microsoft Access which was more easier/familiar to the some of the community than SQL Server or Oracle.

The Firebird® Data Provider is a new sub project under the core which will allow DotNetNuke to run using a Firebird Database.  Firebird® is a relational database which runs on Linux, Windows and other flavors of the Unix Platform. It is ANSI SQL compliant and has a very small footprint in comparision to MS SQL Server or Oracle. It can also be run in an embedded mode requiring little or no interaction from the end user.
The goal of the Firebird Data Provider is to offer yet another alternative for DotNetNuke users who do not wish to use SQL Server or Oracle.

For those interested, you can get some more information on Firebird® from here.

This project was started by various volunteers with the desire of offering another viable alternative for DotNetNuke and thereby increase the overall usage of DotNetNuke. A large portion of the provider was contributed by Sanjay Mehrotra who also is the author of the Oracle Data Provider.

Lots of stuff has been happening in the past few weeks/months which had resulted in my inability to complete this as expected. I had to step away to complete a project in China and am still trying to catch up with the work here before I left for China.
I am hoping that with the help of Greg, we can get this wrapped up very shortly and be able to put out a 3.2.3 and or 4.2.3 version very soon. I'll keep everyone posted as soon as we have more updates regarding the Firebird DP.

Re: Update on Firebird DP

I am working on the last hurtle with FKs in Firebird. I believe I have a solution to the issue and will be running test on it. But basically you can only insert FKs in single mode which requires the DB to open exclusively. I think I can trick the system by inserting the FKs directly to the system tables - please remember this is concept and I am testing whether this is an viable why to accomplish this task.

And welcome back Sanjay - hope China was fun. More to come, and please feel free to email Sanjay or myself with any question.

Re: Update on Firebird DP

Hello everybody...

I still cannot understand why instead of using a "provider" approach for the DB you did not the iBATIS Data Mapper framework....you would have had to make only ONE implementation using standard sql and then have support for much more RDBMS systems...

This way you are struggling to implement a NEW Firebird provider; others are struggling to implement a NEW MySql provider...different code...different bugs...so much lost time...
