Information and progress on the Gallery Module.
By Chris Paterra on 5/7/2006
The next gallery version needs to be talked about in public. I hope that with this communication it will ease some of the frustrations of the community who use this module. I also want to state at this time the next version wil require DotNetNuke Core 3.3 or 4.1 or greater. We are too much into this version to be able to back out of the dependancy on 3.3. The reason is the core file server/manager integration.

Gallery Version 03.20.05:

This will be released probably towards the end of June. (We...

If you would like a full status report as to what is going on you may want to review my Forum blog with the same date. To add to it, Nestor has taken on the DAL setup for this module while I continue to push forward on other items currently on my plate. (As I said, see the forum blog for more details.) I will be getting together with Nes here in the next few days so we can discuss and hopefully get the team together as a whole on this major change.

I received word from Tam and things are getting better with his current situation. However, Tam is still not available to us as a team therefore:

The DAL is in the planning phase w/ the team.

As a team we will collectively work on implementing the DAL to work as new, then work on migrating the existing data for upgrade scenarios.

We will test the module on both DotNetNuke versions currently the latest available at that time

We will release a beta

I appologize to the gallery module project supporters, we have been waiting on an update from Tam and something personal has taken him away from us for now. We all wish him the best. Knowing this, we are forming a team meeting this week to update all of us on status and I will post some info from the meeting here after it happens.

Currently, we are not extremely active because we are waiting for Tam's DAL implementation.  Tam has been working on this when he can and he and I have discussed it.  We cannot dive into anything else until this is done because pretty much the entire module will now revolve around this.  We thank those who are using the module for their patience and continued support.  For me, this DAL implementation is the key to making hte module not only better, but easier to work on.  I think this will get the team more...

My .NET article was published here: http://br.sys-con.com/read/163749.htm

It is about this project.

The best part of a module release is that you get feedback.  I guess at times this is also the worst part about it.  I have to say that even though you do get some pretty critical feedback, it is nothing compared to the verbal abuse you take when you go six months without a release :)

It should be known that getting the Gallery module to be running as smoothly as the forums module does is very important to me.  If you have followed the progress of the forums module you should see there is definately a...

I was unable to use the blog for 2 months because of a bug.

After reading through some of these comments, and having to delete one, I have no desire to write anything else.

The gallery project was released and the DAL for it is being worked on now, because there isn't one.

I appologize for my brief absence but I have good reasons.  I was sick for most of a week and then had to move.  I just now got internet back at home and almost all my DNN development is done at home in my freetime.

Anyways, the Gallery module was about to release but we found a security problem.  WIth me not being available until now, I haven't had a chance to fix it.

I will be looking to get this fixed ASAP now that I am back online.

I received the test results from Sebastian and the results are I am going to live.  Seriously, the localization test results don't look like much work we have to finish before release.  He did mark a few things as bugs/questionable which will not be fixed for this release but I don't think most of you will ever notice what those things are.  Not trying to pull one over on you guys, you just have to stop somewhere and push the release though.  To judge we looked at what is critical and what will definately be...

We had a few teamers install the gallery module and give a bit of feedback over a couple days.  So far it seems the major bugs are gone and the module functions as expected.  There are a couple theme issues we are looking into along w/ any localization issues.  (I sent a copy to Sebastian for loclization testing, thanks Sebastian!)

Depending on when Sebastian has time and gets back to me, I plan on releasing within a couple days after that.  (time to change/test what he finds.)  I have been keeping Shaun...

Depending on how things are coming along for Jeremy and Daniel, I think we will be looking to do another beta release this weekend.  To be quite honest, I just want to release the darn thing regardless of status as long as it installs.  It can't be any worse than what is currently out there now.

I am sure I am not alone in this, but it seems everytime something gets fixed another issue unfolds.  The good news is that the 3:1 ratio eventually runs the numbers down :)

It seems the normal usage bugs are about gone, but making the module easier to use and up to normal DotNetNuke sub-project standards is far from done.  Today Jeremy and I knocked out several more bugs and also spoke about the proper usage of the Gemini bug tracker.  It's definately a nice change to have a team working through fixes...

Well, in following a practice we set w/ forums we renamed the Skins to Themes.  This was to avoid confusion.  Users shouldn't be thinking themes are as flexible as skins.  This was to avoid that confusion.

Couple of the fixed items over the past two weeks:

- Skinning issues corrected.

- Business controller class in dnn file corrected.

- GAL-1968 - Added missing save image in image editor popup.

- GAL-1981 - Renamed Skins to Themes.

-GAL-1983 - Corrected popup cancel...

Had a little chat session with Jeremy and Daniel today.  I think we had a productive meeting.  We are all now introduced and everyone has access to vault and gemini.  We covered some procedure type things and I answered questions about the subproject development enviroment along w/ any other questions they had.

We established that we are going to work on getting everything into gemini and verifying those things which are already fixed.  This should not take too long and should allow for some heavy development...

After spending even more time w/ gallery, its not looking all that bad.  I am thinking that a good weekend of drinking and coding can get it done.  Wait, the drinking might be the reason there were bugs in the last release maybe I should pass on it this time.  Seriously though, many of the current identified bugs are already gone.  It's always nice to see that something is fixed which you thought was still broken.

As for the team, finally have everyone with access to vault and gemini as of this evening. ...

I didn't go all out, just started testing and using Gemini.  I found a couple of issues but the majority of them were already fixed which was a pleasant suprise.  Tam and I discussed a couple things which will factor in future releases.

The plan is still release a patch beta release to get people able to use it w/ minimal errors again.  The best would be no errors but we are working under a tight schedule and have to release something soon.

I have been held up by others @ PDC and my development of a DNN SDK.  This has caused a delay in me starting on gallery full time again.  I have been pushed back by about 5 days.  I am still shooting for a patch beta release in under about two weeks now.

As I am doing with the forums project, aside from this upcomming release, I will no longer be communicating a release date in the forums.  I will try to provide a general timeframe here in this blog along with what is going on.  The discussion of release...

I am now focused on gallery.  I am spending later this evening going through a test run to see what is outstanding and logging all the issues.  One thing that is causing me some grief is it is PDC time and those who can help me get my sub-project team going are now away for the week.

My team is just about ready to help me fix this release but they can't access anything until they have proper access.  I will continue to go at it alone and keep in communication with them while we wait for this to get hashed...
