Taking control of the Banner module

by Lorraine Young on Tuesday, October 03, 2006 9:00 PM

The banners module is one of DNN's old time classic modules. Both the module and the Vendors directory have seem some changes lately, but the central functionality is the same - you can display banners on a page which update when the page is refreshed or moved away from and then back to.

It often seems that the module takes license to display banners as it likes, but this is not the case - chose carefully the order in which you add your banners as this determines the order in which they appear in the module. Updating modules does not change the order - so add them in the right order the first time. By chosing the right sequence you can achieve interesting result - for example I have recently used the banners module inside the ZDModuleWrapper to enable 3x3 different colored banners to always appear on the page at a different time. That is there is always 3 banners of a different color showing at one time and never two of the same color. Once the website is launched, I'll add a link to my blog so you can see the results.

My blog aims to assist DotNetNuke users of all level - from site visitors, module and page editors through to Administrators and the Host with using DNN. Topics covered will include updates on the Help Project, content changes with the Online Help resource, as well as any other DotNetNuke related areas.

Interesting... didn't know the order mattered!

I think this module should be heavily upgraded as it is the cornerstone (advertising) of most sites, and it's been a while since it was touched (2 years?)

Specifying a target, more intelligent ad showing (e.g. I want to give a vendor 1000 impressions a month only), better reporting etc...

One recent update to the Vendors area was a rather simple change which has vastly improved efficiency. This feature is the simple addition of a "Copy" option in the Edit Banner section. In the past, the info fields for each new Banner "campaign" would have to be keyed in each time a Banner was renewed (when the webmaster didn't simply wish to push the end dates.) Now, with the Copy option, an exisiting or retired campaign can easily be renewed or restarted -- only the start/end dates must be updated, and the rest of the info is copied over. While not a truly high-end solution, this certainly helps those advertisers who wish to set-up multiple ad runs within a single campaign (daily, weekly, etc) to track traffic/click patterns, etc

How about adding the ability for non-admin users, or allowing specific roles to manage banners... it would be nice for example to have a non admin user be able to upload banners and make changes...just a thought

I would like the ability to determine the order of the banners. We have certain banners that are always on the site. But recently we wanted to add a banner that was shown more frequently...say every third time.

At the moment if we simply add two instances of the banner we end up with the banner displaying twice in a row and then not for quite a while.

I could reorganize them, but it's just so much work for something that should be simple.

You're right MeRauluka it is alot of work. I am on the Help project and not working on banners so any suggestions for banner improvements are best directed to the Forum.
