Just in time for Christmas a new version of DotNetNuke has been released. On it's 4 year anniversary of the first release, DotNetNuke released version 4.4.

"On December 24th, 2002, the code which was to become the DotNetNuke web application framework was first released to the community.  On the fourth anniversary of this date, DotNetNuke version 4.4.0 - a release with significant performance enhancements - has now been made available for download"

If you've never used DotNetNuke before, do yourself a favor and try it out, there are no licensing fees to download it, use it, or even modify it. It's open source, free, and a great way to easily start building a website via an intuitive web based UI.

Version 4.4 marks the first ASP.NET 2.0 only release, prior to this release DNN was maintaining two sets of code, one for .Net 1.1 and one for .Net 2.0. 4.4 marks significant improvements in performance over previous versions as this version was heavily tested and tweaked in a full scale performance lab.

Here's an edited list of changes from the change log available at http://support.dotnetnuke.com/project/ChangeLog.aspx?PROJID=2

Re: A new version of DotNetNuke today!

I snuck out from family Christmas do, downloaded and installed 4.4, all worked beautifully! 1st impressions on a remote install/shared server were a much faster load time altho I can't say I really tested it fully. Congrats as usual to all the team - Merry Christmas!

Chris, in looking for an update on the Wiki project by going to your Wiki project blog, I caught your blog posting about the release of DNN 4.4. So, that told me that you're back from Costa Rica (congrats on getting married)!

Would you be able to post more regular updates on where things are with the Wiki project? There just aren't many alternatives in the DNN universe for a feature-rich Wiki -- in fact, I haven't found any that I can use. It's pretty tough being downstream and always wondering what's happening with the Wiki project.

Re: A new version of DotNetNuke today!

Great work guys!

I noticed marked improvments in performance, especially with my older servers with less hardware resources. I haven't had a chance to do a diff on all the code yet, but I'm looking forward to checking out all the changes. BTW, this fixed a few bugs that I hadn't had time to get around to.

Thanks a lot, and have a great holiday season and best of luck to you and yours this new year!

Re: A new version of DotNetNuke today!

I'm curious - the performance enhancements - are they primarily performance enhancements over version 4, or did they compare to version 3 also? The reason I ask: I have a very big DNN3 site, with 30+ modules, and I've been holding off on upgrading. A big performance improvement would be a compelling reason to finally take the plunge. However, from version 2 to 3 performance decreased (I know, functionality increased, I'm not criticizing!) and I don't know if there was a further decrease from 3 to4 - which, if 4.4 then corrected, *could* make 3 roughly =4, performance-wise, in which case there's no reason for me to upgrade (I'm perfectly happy with the functionality I have in version 3, just not the performance).

do you know if there are any comparisons of 4.4 against 3 i.t.o. speed experienced by customer and also memory footprint on server? My version of 3 implements HTTP compression and all the "standard tricks" used to optimize performance.
