WizardDotNetNuke Feature Videos

This will be the first in a series of blogs that show DotNetNuke features in action.  Each video will highlight one new DotNetNuke feature.  My point with the video's will be to supplement some of the great blogs from Charles and others by showing a video of a specific feature which is able to capture more of the feature subtleties which do not always translate well to static screen images.

In this first video, we see the new Installation Wizard.  Installation has long been a pain point in the DotNetNuke community, and this is the first in a series of steps aimed at simplifying the process and making it more accessible to new users.

One of my favorite aspects of the new Wizard is that we are finally using more Asp.Net 2.0 functionality.  For a long time we have been hindered by our desire to support both the 1.1 and 2.0 frameworks.  This caused us to hold off on using many new Asp.Net 2.0 features because of the extra work that would have been involved in porting those features to the 1.1 platform.  Now that we have stopped 1.1 development we are finally able to begin taking advantage of some of the new 2.0 capabilities.  This does not mean that we will support every 2.0 feature, because honestly, in some cases the native DotNetNuke solution surpasses what is available in .Net.  In this case, I think it was the right decision to use the Asp.Net wizard features.

UPDATE:  If you have questions about this feature, please post them to the forums.  This video is only meant to be a preview of a feature which shipped with DotNetNuke 4.5 and is not meant to fully explain the installation process.

Re: DotNetNuke 4.5 Features: Installation Wizard

Maybe some steps that would be useful to add to the wizard :
- Configure scheduling
- Set modules to premium
- ...

Now we use an additional sql script to do this.

Re: DotNetNuke 4.5 Features: Installation Wizard

I believe that the intent of the configuration wizard is to enable successful installation and setup of the basic portal for most users. Once that is accomplished there are good tools for additional configuration.

Re: DotNetNuke 4.5 Features: Installation Wizard

While there are definitely some additional steps we may want to add, we have to be careful not to add too much or else we can end up making the wizard too complicated for begginners to understand.

Re: DotNetNuke 4.5 Features: Installation Wizard

If you find the number of wizard steps growing you may introduce a:
"Set Advance Options" section that allows more experienced admins the ability to do some cool things.

Re: DotNetNuke 4.5 Features: Installation Wizard

Me parece muy buena la implementación de AJAX ya que facilita mucho la instalación del DNN ya que con las versiones anteriores siempre había problemas con la conexión de SQL. Pero bueno cuando tendremos para libre descarga el DNN 4.5?.

The AJAX implementation seems very good to me since the installation of the DNN facilitates much since with the previous versions always there were problems with the SQL connection. But good when we will have for free it unloads DNN 4,5.

Re: DotNetNuke 4.5 Features: Installation Wizard

The video starts off where the wizard is already open. How do I open it? I've downloaded all the zip files of DNN4.05, but can't find the place to start the wizard.
Do I first need to create a virtual directory in IIS as was the case in DNN3?

Re: DotNetNuke 4.5 Features: Installation Wizard

A video converting a live DotNetNuke site to a local web service installation would greatly completement this initial installation video.
