Perhaps I'm spending too much time programming DNN...

I had a dream where a person comes to my DotNetNuke portal and they are standing in a 3D lobby. They see a number of doors and signs.

They can use their keyboard or mouse to move around in this virtual reality and they can even see (and talk to) other people who are visiting the portal (or they can choose to stay hidden). They can click on a hanging banner labeled "Quick Survey" and participate in a Survey from the Survey module.

They can go into the Administrators room (if they have access) and change portal settings.

While they are looking for files in the "Repository Module" room an optional chat window allows them to chat and their "communicator" allows them to to talk with others using voice and video.

At any time they can see and respond to the Forum messages that they are tracking because they also show up in an optional floating window.

And look the portal administrator just installed a store module. They can pull up the site map, click on the room and they are now standing in a mall with moving video and 3D products.

To create additional rooms the portal administrator simply installs modules and configures security the way it is currently done. The difference is some modules will have the ability to "Render in 3D Silverlight")

If the visitor does not have Silverlight or chooses not to use Silverlight they will see the DNN portal in the usual way.

I know, perhaps I'm spending too much time programming DNN...

Re: A 3D DotNetNuke Dream

I had the same dream 9 year ago, then it was called VRML and in the end it turned out to be a nightmare... We'll see if it will work this time...

Re: A 3D DotNetNuke Dream

Yeah, there were a million of these kinds of things in the mid to late 90s. Virtual Offices where you navigated a 3D space to access information and communicate with co-workers. Virtual Worlds like Cybertown. They never took off because the novelty wore off quickly and then just got in the way, and people preferred to access things quickly and simply. Why turn left and walk up to the file cabinet when you could just click it from a list. The studies indicated people became annoyed and usage dropped rapidly.

But, that's just in general. There are some good applications for it, especially in the entertainment space.

Yes, entertainment, just check PKR, the poker online game....but, this is also what I meant one day when I envisioned DNN as a webtop.

Re: A 3D DotNetNuke Dream

I agree with you ... but I don't think that the UI has to be like a conventional 3D space: it could just be a lot slicker version of what is DNN already: I would imagine the 3D space could be a skin just like the current skins, and each workspace, be it a room or just an icon that flys out from the side with cool animation, would simply be a module container, in this case modules being silverlight user controls instead of web user controls!

Re: A 3D DotNetNuke Dream

Careful with your dream- MLKJr had a dream... but I maybe spread my humor too thin.
It's been brought up and skillfully forgetten.Yes you are on the edge of what can happen, absolutely, but let us not forget BOB... did we really ever learn what was on the other side of the wall... or the fireplace...
On the other hand, if a simple pivot left or right only presented a new set of options... who knows what would happen?
Maybe BOB should've started out at his chair, with emails to the left, documents to the right and instant messages directly in front? and a click to the left would've taken him to Encarta and one to ther right to Live Search... a click above would connect with contacts and a click elsewhere could search the Internet....
Who knows?
