There has been a fair amount of discussion in the forums regarding the visibility of the View/Edit mode of the DNN Control Panel. I believe the new 'Control Panel Security' option in DNN 4.5.5 solves this concern nicely, by giving the Administrator the option of choosing how users experience this feature.

The 'Control Panel Security' setting is a new option in DNN 4.5.5 located under Site Settings > Usability Settings. It enables the Administrator to choose who can view the Edit/View Mode section of the control panel by either restricting it to Page Editors only, or by setting it to be visible to both Page Editors and Module Editors.

That's great news - I hated that bar showing to all my users!

Control panel visiblity really needs a third option - Either to display it to admins only or to an assigned role. This would allow us to let a role have access to module placement and module titles without giving them control over navigation. There really has to be a way to just change module titles without having full control over pages... and that would do it. [Lorraine Replies: Be sure to add your comments to the forum for discussion]

I thought it was there since 4.5.2 or 3... no? [Lorraine replies: If it was then I missed it! I was only aware of Control Panel Mode and Control Panel Visibility settings]

I have to admit that feature is along time coming. But it nice to have. You guys are making my little contribution worthwhile every month.

Can you explain to me the difference between page editors and module editors? Thanks. ----- [Lorraine says: A page editor is a user who belongs to a role that has been given edit permissions to the page, whereas a module editor is a user who belongs to a role that has been given edit permissions to a module on the page]

Re: New Feature in DNN 4.5.5 - 'Control Panel Security' setting

It is a good thing. But the following feature I added to my version could be a good one too. The feature is to allow the user to view the portal with one of the role that the user has. I add a menu on the left part of the control panel that contains the list of roles. The user choose one and the the portal change its mode to the view as a user with only this role. When the portal is in this mode, a small icon appears on the right side and then the user click in this icon to back in the default mode. --- [Lorraine replies: sounds groovy - maybe throw it around in the forums to see how others feel]

This is great option, although we had the way to not to show control panel to the page editors even before.
