Everything below is completely my opinion and nothing else! Most of it is minute by minute during the session without edits.
This morning we're starting off at the "Panel Discussion: Open Source on the Microsoft Technology Stack" with
Shaun Walker, Phil Haack, Rob Conery, Scott Hanselman
Walker - DNN CEO
Hanselman - Sr. Program Manager at MS
Haack - Sr. Program Manager on ASP.NET Team
Conery - Commerce Starter Kit, Subsonic
Open discussion on OS on MS.
Licensing discussion
Subsonic and Starter Kit, who's contributing, liability, how to deal with Forks, who owns the code. MPL 1.1, protects people providing the code, project moving forward. MPL 1.1 required keeping the same license no matter what you do with the code MPL Mozilla Public License. Project handed over, license was modified.
Subtext licensed under BSD, choice between GPL or non-GPL. .Net community didn't appear very popular due to viral nature and .Net being more business related. GPL would've allowed dual licensing where BSD wouldn't allow it.
Dasblog, BSD license as well. "Ultimately we all just want credit" Dasblog has had companies reselling the project. Dealing with Project Forks. Dasblog is scrapbooking for Hanselman
DNN, consulted MS when looking at licensing options
Lawyer reviews of licenses. Indemnification additions in licenses,
Fork Discussion, benifits versus downfalls. Forks are good in some communities and not others. General concensus that forks hurt smaller projects and projects used in business environments
Charlie Poole from nUnit had some discussions about licensing and how MS hates him.
Peter Donker, question about Microsoft's opinion on OS. Sam Ramji (sp?) effectively the director of OS at MS.
Microsoft has hurdles for licenses and releases for cool things, thoughts of moving things with source to codeplex getting rid of licensing issues from MS and support process.
Guthrie has a big vision on OS and helps spread the attitude around the company.
PMs are sneaking apps out of MS, plugin for Windows LiveWriter that made it out on his blog.
Discussion on backlash of various projects that have been squashed, ex: ndoc.
Haack - MVC framework, goal was not to kill the Castle Project
Shaun Walker speaks about how OpenForce is trying to open up open source packaging for all .Net projects
Hanselman brings up the point of how many people are actually involved in opensource projects. We have to support ourselves
Discussion of "fear" within MS. Copyright and Patent violations. Problems with patent laws soap box from Haack, I must say I agree with the thoughts that our patent laws need review in this day and age.
Question: Do you find that clients are open to "open source" because the source is available and they can take it on themselves if necessary.
