Just in time for the DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 has been published for public download at the DotNetNuke download page. New features include the option to use Admin modules like any other modules, a new Extensions Installer for Modules, Skin Objects, Skins, Containers, Providers and Language Packs as well as adopted admin and host modules to manage these extensions. Permissions can now be granted and revoked per role and single users.
The package also contains new "Form and List 5" module, the successor of User Defined Table module, please read Stefan Cullmann's Blog for details.
Please be aware, that this is a preview version, which is not intended to be used in production environments!!!

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
Some users are still ignorant why we don't recommend a Release Candidate for production use. It is not so much about the quality of the product. You simply can't upgrade the RC to the final version! All betas and Release Candidates are using the same version number 05.00.00, which means that even if you are able to replace all files, the sql scripts won't fire and the database won't be updated!

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
Thanks Stefan for elaborating on the reason why we cannot upgrade RC2 to final release. If I do a lot of testing on the RC2 and decide to keep the sites I create, would I be able to upgrade when the version number does change?

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
that's a very good question. Mike. This will for sure be an upgrade path, which has not been tested by the core team.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
The main problem is that we don't know the exact path we go and how many RCs are finally needed. It is hard work to stay sync. I used to write my own upgrade scripts going from one beta to the next beta, or for even staying sync against the internal source repository. That worked often, however sometimes it is not enough to handle just the sql scripts. For example modules implementing IUpgradeable may run additional code. Upgrading from RC1 05.00.00 to a version later, for example 05.00.01 won't work, as the sql script for DNN 05.00.01 would expect the 05.00.00 final schema as starting point.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
Regarding Mike Cox's question, there should be a means of exporting and importing sites, regardless of DNN version.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
The point is RC2 is NOT supported, it's for testing (we look forward to your results in Gemini) and gives skinners and developers a "heads up". Those who want to develop live websites should use 4.9.0 or wait for the full release of DNN5 (anything could change including the importing/exporting feature). Thankyou.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
How will upgrade from 4.9 to 5.x be accomplished, once the full release of DNN5 is available? Will it be just like upgrading, say, 4.8 to 4.9 was? Also, is the new release likely to break commercial modules that are running, say, on 4.9? (Obviously, I'll test before upgrading our production installation, but I was just curious as to how disruptive it might be in upgrading to DNN5.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
Any documentation coming out for developers on the changes? Especially related to module development and Skinning.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
Upgrade from 4.6.2 or later to final DNN 5.0.0 will be like an upgrade from 4.8 to 4.9: Unzip files and browse your site.

Regarding documentation, there are already a couple of blog posts from Charles Nurse, besides the documentation team is working on our new Documentation Center.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
Stephen, the goal is to have ZERO breaking changes. No module, independent from its nature, whether it is commercial or open source, should break on upgrade. Saying that points to the nature of a Release Candidate. Developers and Skinners should test their existing modules, skin objects, skins and containers against the RC and report any issues. They should not relax and wait for the final. Now it is still time to fix any issue.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
Any product, especially one as mature as DNN should be upgradeable whether it is an RC or not. Why not therefore change the version numbers for RCs. E.g. DNN 5.0.0 RC1, DNN 5.0.1 RC2 and DNN 5.0.3 (production version) for example. Its simple and it works. Obviously the "DO USE IN A PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT" will always have to be in bold.

Re: DotNetNuke 5.0.0 RC2 available for download
Richard, we need to be careful with our resources and try to avoid unnecessary time spend on additional upgrade paths and tests. Since DNN is open source, you might create it your own - and take over all the risk alone.
