If you are a long time DotNetNuke addict you always knew how to install new core modules: Host ->Modules

Below the list of installed modules was always a list of Available Modules:

If you visit the same page in DNN5, Available Modules is gone:

The functionality has moved. DNN5 introduces a new extension installer, dealing with modules, skins, containers, providers, skin objects and language packs. So now learn to go to Host -> Extensions and click on to get to the page showing all extensions available for instant installation on your site:

PS:

Yes, I know that there was (and still is) a shortcut for a long, long time inside the control panel:

But maybe there are some more people who sometimes don't see the wood for the trees like me.

Re: DNN5: Where are all the modules gone?

Stefan:

Just a suggestion, for the sake of the newbies that are going to go crazy looking for the option to intall new modules and that will ask the same question a million times in the Forums. Could that option be renamed to "Install Additional Modules and Extensions"? You can even get rid of the word "Additional", it is redundant in my mind. So maybe just "Install Modules and Extensions"

It is just a matter of usability, remember to think as a user (maybe not a technical one) and not as a programmer when moving things around and renaming things.

Yes - I agree with Carlos! I think DotNetNuke could benefit from having a non-tech person go through and assign names to features. DNN is great from a developers standpoint and even then it's not always intuitive. From a non-tech perspective finding features is somewhat a challenge.

Re: DNN5: Where are all the modules gone?

The CT is in the process of setting up a usability group, you'll be happy to know. More news will follow soon I hope.

Re: DNN5: Where are all the modules gone?

Umm. forgive me but what is the difference between modules and extensions? They seem to be the same thing.

Re: DNN5: Where are all the modules gone?

A module is just one type of extension. Skins, containers, etc are others.

You wrote, "DNN5 introduces a new extension installer, dealing with modules, skins, containers, providers, sin objects...." DNN just gets sexier by the minute! ;-)

Re: DNN5: Where are all the modules gone?

I corrected it to Skin objects. Don't give up hope: the extension installer is extensible...

Re: DNN5: Where are all the modules gone?

A usability group? Awesome! I have for a long time been thinking that there should be different modes available. Basic and Advanced. DNN has become so feature rich that many first time users (not dnn enthusiasts, developers, or it junkies) have a hard time just using it. Training is becoming almost mandatory. Hopefully the usability group will find a similar need for a "Basic" mode that removes some of the more advanced features from view.

Re: DNN5: Where are all the modules gone?

I think the move is a great idea, as is the usability group.
