Work has resumed on the Gallery front and I have a few project updates for the community.
Release status
As the project page description states, the 4. 3 version will be compatible with DotNetNuke 4.9.1 and above when it is released. If you are wondering when that will happen, we don't have a specific date but it should be a few more weeks.
The Gallery project was submitted last year to the Release Tracker. A few weeks ago we were informed that it did not pass the security review and we have started work to make the appropriate corrections.
The strange case of version 3.0.12 reappearance
Many had been downloading the last available version of Gallery which was 3.0.12. As a short recap, that version was available back in the days were parallel versions of DNN 3 and DNN 4 existed. It worked in both but we decided to downgrade the release to beta back in early 2007 and we removed its availability altogether last year.
Since most projects have been silently moving to CodePlex, the 3.0.12 version showed up again and people began to download it the past few weeks. Due to Codeplex policies we are keeping it around but it has been downgraded further into Alpha status, and explicit warnings have been added to emphasizes ther fact that Gallery should not be used.
Team Shuffling
As in any project there are underperformers and there are stars. This time I want to proudly highlight the promotion of two members into team leadership. This rather a formalization of what has been happening last year. Bill Severance and Matthias Schlomann were the main workhorses of the progress carriage and I am honored that both now share Lead title. Bill is the new project co-Lead and Matthias is officially our Test Manager.
Bill's tasks will be sharing responsibilites related to the management of the project and team. You can expect his code contributions to continue normally. Matthias will be in charge of coordinating the testing team. He's out to recurit more members, so if you want to help, he's the man to go to.
Roadmap
As soon as next month we will start the path of a complete re-write of the Gallery module which will become the Media Gallery module. The effort will implement a TDD approach and it will support upgrades from the 4.x versions. However the future releases will require DNN 5.X. This is a necessary change to be able to leverage JQuery and future enhancements to the core.
Presentation templating, a DAL implementation, better permission handling, tighter integration with the core, RIA implementations (Silverlight ATM), third party extensions (Facebook, Flickr, Pikasa, Microsoft Live services, etc) are some of the features that will be included in future versions.
This is certainly an exciting opportunity to make the module a killer application for DotNetNuke with rich features out of the box and you are welcome to be part of the project. There are a few seats available and you can read more about the requirements you need to fulfill to apply by clicking here. We'll be glad to have you as part of the project.
