Today (March 18th, 2009) during the keynote at MIX 09, Scott Guthrie announced the release of version 2 of the Web Platform Installer (WPI) and the release of the new Web Application Gallery.
Bill Staples, the Program Manager responsible for the Web Application Gallery described it as an “App Store for the Web”. I am pleased to say that DotNetNuke Community Edition is part of this initiative and that Bill Staples used DotNetNuke as his demonstration install during the keynote.

The Installation Experience
When you click on an the install link, you will get a popup (in Firefox 3) that confirms which program you want to use to run the installer. In my case I already have the Web Platform Installer on my machine.
The Installer will launch and you will get the following screen.
Clicking on Install will download the application (in the case of DotNetNuke from Codeplex) and display the following screen, where you can provide an “Application Name” – the default is dotnetnuke.
The second page allows the user to configure the database.
Clicking continue will set up IIS and SQL Server. You will then see the final screen, which lets you know that the install was successful.
Finally clicking the link will automatically launch the DotNetNuke Install Wizard to complete the installation of your DotNetNuke Application.
Scott Hanselman has blogged about the new installer, using Das Blog as the example. He describes some of the technical details behind the installer. In a future article I will describe the set up of the DotNetNuke package, which I created for this initiative.
I think this is an important step in improving the install/setup experience of web applications. Go to the Web Application Gallery and add your reviews (good of course!) and rating for DotNetNuke.

I agree with this being the next big step / improvement in web application installation. I have been using this tool since it came out, and it makes my life so easy. Hit a few buttons, type a few lines of info, hit complete and it spins up a new installation of DNN for me. Something I do on a weekly bases. The more important thing though is it really simplifies things for less technical people. I have even researched using this for my hosting business. Instead of using scripts to do all the setup of IIS, I can give users some folder access and they can do all the installs they want application wise, and I don't have to worry about what they are possibly doing to my IIS. I also don't have to deal with them trying to install an app and then me troubleshooting their installs.
I see the installer and gallery, being a way for publishing houses to easily distrubute their software as well. Write a package for the gallery, and poof now anyone can install your software. :)
Good news to hear the Community version is there and used as the how to guide app. :)

This is a big step for making setup of a standard installation really easy. The only negative I see is that it does not allow users to install DNN using some of the advance setup options.
1) Regular user with no explicit permissions, and admin with dbowner permissions using the UpgradeConnectionString.
2) Regular user with no explicit permissions, and admin with limited permissions using the UpgradeConnectionString.
3) Regular user with limited permission
4) Running under different dbo
5) etc, etc.
Don't get me wrong, this is really cool and a very good thing for DNN. But it still does not address the installation of DNN using some of the advance setup scenarios (and the installation wizard in DNN doesn't handle these either w/o manually updating the web.config). Hoping to chat with Charles about some of my ideas in the next couple of weeks.

I'm on windows XP and got that same error message too. Database DotNetNuke could not be created.. I can't find help anywhere and the forum is experiencing technical difficulties... So far so lost.

I thought this tool would be a lifesaver, all I get is the same error as the rest of you; the database dotnetnuke not be created. Even after creating one and specifying to the installer to use an existing one, it still doesn't work on my XP pro laptop.
