First of all, welcome to my very first blog post on the DotNetNuke® website.  I am very excited to be able to bring you information here, especially about the Media Module.  I have been working on many areas of the Media Module for some time now, and I have laid out the details of the current planned release on my personal blog.  I won’t rehash that post, but I can summarize it for you.  This release of the Media Module focuses on 3 things:

1. Bug Fixes
2. XHTML Compliance
3. Architectural Changes for Future Updates on the roadmap (more on the roadmap in a subsequent post)

While this version is built to be compatible with DNN versions 04.06.02 and above, you should know that the next release will be a DNN 05.x release.  Meaning, you will only be able to install it on a DNN 5 website.  In this release, I thought it was important to support the legacy DNN installs with the XHTML and bug updates.  From this point forward though, I will strongly suggest that you upgrade your DNN sites as soon as possible.

This most certainly begs the question, “When is the module going to be released?”  Naturally so…  We cannot speculate on a release date of a module, because there are simply too many factors involved in getting a module released.  (All good factors though.)  I can tell you that I have put the module into the release tracker numerous times already.  Thankfully, this process has caught quite a few things that I overlooked, so I am very pleased to have this process, and dedicated people (core team members) who take it seriously.

Alpha Release Available

I have had a small number of requests to see a “beta” copy of this module.  Well, you’re in luck!  I just release the module in alpha status on the codeplex website.

DNN Media Module 03.03.00a

PLEASE BE AWARE that this is not an official release!!!  This is meant to only give you a preview of what the intended release could be.  You should make backups of your DNN site and database before installing/upgrading using the alpha install/source package.  Additionally, you should NOT run this module on a production website.  Doing any of the above could result in an unusable website and/or any other number of problems.

Please feel free to run this package through its paces, and give me feedback using the Media Module Forum.  In order for me or anyone else to be able to correctly address your issues, please clearly mark your post to show that you’re using the Alpha release.

I hope this module meets your needs at the moment, but remember that this is only the first release marking the resurgence of this module.  There are many things coming to this module.  I will be speaking about those updates in another blog post.
