The evolution of DotNetNuke branding is well chronicled in chapter 1 of the Wrox Professional DotNetNuke 5 book but a lot has happened since Shaun and Nik originated the current logo concepts way back in 2005. The ever increasing capability of digital media processing has increased our appetite for resolution, detail and as Hollywood has proven, dimension!

As it turns out, however, the basic design of the gear and triad has not only withstood the test of time, but become a well known and respected symbol of our company and our community.  We’re stepping out with giants like James Cameron and Pixar to stake our claim in the 3D future-world, but you won't need 3D glasses for our new logo!

The new logo retains all the recognition of the current brand but adds the texture of chrome.  For some this will harken back rebel days of a “tubular chrome” skin and thoughts of “cool”, attributes which have been important to our past and continue to be important to our future.  For others chrome might represent the “steel” of commitment and resolve that users have come to expect from DotNetNuke. The gear is made more prominent, adding dimension to its teeth and is anchored on a small drop shadow.

LOGO_template_RGB A key consideration for our new logo design was just as Shaun once articulated it, “Would my wife permit me to wear clothing embossed with the logo when we went out in public together?”

We’re pleased to acknowledge that Jo-Lynn, Allison, Gloria and Savitha still approve!

Along with our updated logo, we’re providing a Logo Center for convenient access to images that can be used in accordance with updated logo guidelines.  You can expect to start seeing our new logo in public immediately, it’s already in the Windows Web App Gallery!

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

Love it!
I'm glad to hear of the strong commitment to the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) as well - wise move on the part of the founders!

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

I'm so-so on the 3D-bling of the new logo; the original had a certain simple appeal. However, the smalls-caps version of the "DotNetNuke" name definitely looks amaeurish - perhaps reconsider this bit?

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

@B Johnson ~ Although I've not promoted it here, we are still retaining the simple 2D logo... but only for applications where full color / 3D is problematic (consider silk screening, for example). With regard to the "small-caps" version of DotNetNuke, I honestly think MS may have done a bit of tweaking there on us (which ironically our logo usage policy does not permit). The vertical orientation (name under triad) is not even part of our public usage policy, we just permitted it specifically for this purpose to maximize the logo in the space which would have otherwise been quite small in our normal orientation.

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

Kind of looks like a meat grinder to me. Sort of how I'm feeling right now. This is not the easiest CMS I have ever had to make new modules for. :( On my 12th iteration of configurations now. Crossing fingers.

@sbeckstead ~ Send me a list of the top 5 things that you think would transform it into the easiest CMS you have ever had to make new modules for. I'm interested, OK? Thank you! scott AT dnncorp.com

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

Will there be any monochrome/2 colour versions, or versions that need to be shown with quite small dimensions (no shadow & shading etc.) available in the logo centre soon?.

Also, is it "acceptable" to show a logo as per the footer of www.deburca.co.uk/ or would this now be against the guidelines?

Final question!, will the TM be replaced with a R soon?

Cheers,

James

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

@James ~ Two terrific questions, thanks for the opportunity to answer them! One thing to note is that while our logo guidelines have been updated, it is primarily to reflect the changes in the logo itself and to provide clearer explanation of the existing guidelines. The guidelines themselves have not substantively changed. So, for example, your usage of a B&W version is fine, although we'll probably provide you with a slightly cleaner B&W rendition that is consistent with the size guidelines. We'll be continuing to add acceptable collateral to the Logo Center as needed. If you don't find what you need soon, please drop myself or Bill (bill AT dnncorp.com) a quick note.

On the TM question, the answer is a yes. Our logos are recognized as trademarks and the registration process is underway. As soon as they are officially approved, all the collateral will be updated to reflect the Registered status.

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

No offense to the designer but in my opinion the previous logo was much better. Looks kind of horrible on old machines with average graphics card. Give it another try I know you can do better if not I will be happy to help.

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

@Tareq ~ No offense taken. Do me a favor and send me a screen shot of what it looks like for you and your system / graphics card specs? scott AT dnncorp.com. We've based all of our pending design on our site analytics which should account for about 95% of our site visitors.

Re: DotNetNuke’s Got A New Logo!

Just throught I'd comment. The new PE and CE logos on the home page look very jaggy. I use the old CE one on my site where I list what I run my site on, and I'm not sure I want to use the new one :-(
