Initially I was trying to use 2005 SQL server from VS 2008 with 2005 SP3 (WIN 7 64bit). I was unable to make this work. Next I tried manual install of 2008 Express SP3 - no success. I uninstalled everything with 2005 and 2008 SQL sever to get a fresh start

From a clean start tried to use the Web Matrix install for 2008 Express R2.  Discovery report shows SQLEXPRESS instance was created. That's as far as I can get with my knowledge of the tools available with SQL Express. I don't have SQL Server Management Studio with this setup. I have just the Configuration tools: SQL Server Configuration Manager and SQL Server installation Center. The import and export is also there but not relevant to this.

The first error is: The Auto option has been disabled as the DotNetNuke Application cannot connect to a valid SQL Server database.

I come to a hard stop at this error:

Connection Error(s):

Class: 14
Number: 15372

I really have run out of options. Clean install didn't work. Perhaps I have some leftovers from the previous fails that are causing problems. I'm out of things I know to diagnose the connection issue. Help for some next steps would be really appreciated.

I'm further along. I needed SP1 on my Visual Studio 2008 in order to load the SSMS Express so now I have SSMS and have the ability to setup and verify configuration. I'm not there yet; still working on getting the connection with inetmgr and the corresponding setup in SSMS. I haven't used this computer with Visual Studio in quite some time so I wasn't surprised that it wasn't up to date on service packs. This was a reminder to me on how painful it can be when not keeping up with Microsoft dependencies.

I'm a little tired here, but I'm struggling with the Web Matrix install. It fails and there's not a good reason why for the novice. I'm wondering if it would work better to go to a manual install following Chris Hammond's video instruction as a template. Perhaps that would be better to fully understand what's going on. Suggestions on what could be going wrong with the simple Web Matrix installation?

The SQL Express R2 came from the Web Matrix installation.
