Hello,

i saved a copy of the home page of my localhost portal (DNN 4.5.3) and found that there were 249 KB of accompanying AXD, JS and CSS files. As you can see below:

- ScriptResource(1).axd - 29 KB

- ScriptResource.axd - 83 KB

- WebResource.axd - 21 KB

- default.css - 16 KB

- portal.css - 2 KB

- skin.css - 4 KB

- dnn.controls.dnnmenu.js - 25 KB

- dnn.dom.positioning.js - 12 KB

- dnn.js - 29 KB

- dnn.xml.js - 8 KB

- dnn.xmlhttp.js - 7 KB

- dnncore.js - 13 KB

Now, I, with basic basic knowledge of CSS can play with CSS files to minimize their size and remove unnecessary functionality. However i would desparately want to reduce the sizes of other JS and AXD files as well. How to do it?

Raghu.

(I feel most other users must also be wanting to do the same so this should be included in the documentation of DNN.)

Hi Raghu,

Is your site running in Debug mode? If so, you will need to reevaluate your numbers. Running a site in Release will greatly reduce the asp.net ajax-related resource payloads. These are incidently the largest files, as well.

I do not believe there is a "release" version of the dnn script files, but keep in mind that these are downloaded once and cached on the client computer.

Hi Brandon thanks for responding...,

My site is not running under debug mode, here is the corresponding line from my web.config-

<compilation debug="false" strict="false">

I have done a fresh installation from 'Install' version of DNN_4.5.3 zip file as a localhost website. i understand that these files will be cached at user's end, but thinking of dial-up users with typical speeds around 30 Kbps, the home page of my site will take about a minute to open (250+ KB of data)!

Is it just me with these heavy files getting downloaded? i've done a pretty standard install so i think lot of other users too must be facing this.

I am still at square 1 : (

You must have been logged in as an admin to get all that.  Going to your home page as an unauthenticated user should not have all that JS.

I do agree that some optimization is needed though.  The core DNN JS files (ClientAPI) have a lot of redundancy now that MS Ajax is included.

Hi John,

I am getting those files downloaded even as an un-authenticated user. Does being on localhost make any difference?

Do we have somewhere, 'Do-It-Yourself' kind of guide to optimize these files? I ask this because the official optimizations will only happen (if at all) in 4.5.4 or later and it feels physical pain to see my application carry all that extra load around Internet.

Thanks.
